WP11.5.3 High Beta Cavities Delivery 5th SRF Collaboration Meeting 9th February 2017 In collaboration with:

Major activities / phases Niobium procurement: tender live Cavity procurement: writing tender (schedule critical) Infrastructure construction: design & build ongoing RF, Cryo, Cryoplant, Shielding Civil works: delays, within float Quality planning: need to collaborate on details Infrastructure qualification schedule in place plan to be detailed further Risks: cost (exchange rate) & schedule

Hβ Cavity Scope / Tech. Annex Technical Annex Baseline agreed (v1.1) but still pending cover sheet [legal depts STFC & ESS] STFC In-Kind Contribution: Niobium procurement Manage Eddy Current Scanning with DESY Validation of treatment processes (esp. BCP) in industry using ‘pre-series’ cavities Cavity fabrication of 84+4 high beta cavities in industry 2K RF qualification of cavities to 22.9MV/m, Q0 ≥ 5 x 109 Supply documentation & certification related to each cavity test Procurement of ancillaries, valves, antennae etc Transport to Saclay Outside STFC Scope Cavity design (STFC strategy: primarily ‘build-to-print’) Prototyping & trial cavities (CEA)

Project Schedule & Key Milestones MS Description TA Date Forecast 4 Design and procurement of the VTF started 09/2016 04/2016 5 Installation and commissioning of the full VTF system (start) S: 07/2017 F: 06/2018 8 Critical Design Review, reporting, stage 2 starts after approved CDR Q4 2017 TBD 9 Receiving and arrival inspection of first batch Nb material 08/2017 12 FAT at STFC and shipping of high-β cavities for CM 1 to CEA 11/2018 12/2018 18 FAT at STFC and shipping of high-β cavities for CM 2-3 to CEA 01/2019 03/2019 19 FAT at STFC and shipping of high-β cavities for CM 4-6 to CEA 05/2019 20 FAT at STFC and shipping of high-β cavities for CM 7-9 to CEA 07/2019 09/2019 21 FAT at STFC and shipping of high-β cavities for CM 10-12 to CEA 11/2019 12/2019 22 FAT at STFC and shipping of high-β cavities for CM 13-15 to CEA 03/2020 23 FAT at STFC and shipping of high-β cavities for CM 16-18 to CEA 06/2020 24 FAT at STFC and shipping of high-β cavities for CM 19-21 to CEA 10/2020 28 Preparation of the data package for SAR 2 (cavities to CM 2-21 after assembly) and SAT at ESS in Lund Q1 2021 Change agreed Include: Preseries BCP validation Undressed testing Impact: Up to 6 wks on specific deliveries

Cavity Fabrication Procurement Pre-series change request Risks & Issues Much less schedule impact than 1st thought Schedule Series half-cell fabrication in parallel Need to align beween: Testing undressed at DESY / CEA tbd Uppsala test CEA prototypes Cavity procurement specification Pre-series undressed tests Design drawings in progress Series production & CEA cavity production Strategy: Drawing sign-off Tender: Representative processes, QA etc Company input & improvement Need to quickly obtain approval for design drawings Review with STFC, ESS, CEA(?) Finalise on placing contract Examples of cavity definitions: Treatment specifications BCP treatment processes final specification Need to collaborate with ESS, CEA to optimise strategy Input RF antenna specification CMM measurement locations Flexibility in procurement How to collectively finalise procesess Expectation: ESS approve final detailed specifications Required when placing contract Expected June / July 2017

Cavity Procurement Schedule Key considerations: Rapid procurement launch – too early? Processes to agree final cavity specifications? Schedule alignment with other testing ESS, Uppsala CEA Saclay prototypes INFN prototypes / series Schedule alignment @ DESY VERY LIMITED FLOAT!

Technical Progress: Cavities 4th SRF Collab. Mtg: Updated drawings required from ESS 5th SRF collab. Mtg: STFC updating drawings (CAD received 3/02/2017) ESS / CEA to review & approve (retain design responsibility) Helium outlet pipe 430mm radius from cavity beam axis Standard welded flange Compatible w/ CEA pipe cutter Tooling to be agreed between STFC & CEA

Technical Progress: VTF, RF & bunker Minor delays but no impact to critical path Cryostat final design review passed 07/09/2017 Magnetic shield design progressing Cryogenic plant Compressor & oil removal system arrived 2nd delivery due end Feb (on schedule) Bunker Delayed due to change of civil construction contract Work started & cost estimate overbudget; need to reduce cost (pre-cast solution?) RF System design progressing Expect final rack pre-assembly design review late March Procurement of test cavity (Nb coaxial resonator) progressing in parallel QA/QC Need to accelerate

Technical Progress: Cleanroom & HPR HPR System TENDER LIVE Thanks to CEA for support in defining system Lowest risk to delivery schedule to base on existing design as much as possible Single source main HPR if possible UPW system: 30Lpm, 100bar, 18.2MΩ Cleanroom ISO7: Inspection room; outer changing room ISO5: Changing area ISO4: Working area, HPR room, prep room Services, pass-through bulkheads etc all defined Requirements reviewed externally (DESY) Procurement delayed but launching shortly

Quality Assurance To be discussed this afternoon (MDP) Need to work collectively to define: Document storage systems Alfresco costs are too high for HBC project budget Reviewing if other UK-ESS projects could share costs Facility validation plan (high level schedule above) Cavity references Test reproducibility Shipping, handling & processing validation Reports & data parameters / criteria Cavity material & fabrication data requirements SRF test data
