Rutgers, New Brunswick Rutgers is the oldest university in the country that is a land-grant institution, established by the Morrill Act in 1862. This gave federal land to the state to form colleges to teach agriculture, science, engineering. Each state was given 30,000 acres of land to use. Rutgers was given 210,000 acres in Utah, the sale of which provided funds to purchase land in NJ for the experimental farms and to establish the programs. Prior to this time higher learning was dedicated to a classical education of liberal arts (history, classics, Latin, Greek, religion). The Morrill Act radically changed higher education in the country. It was now available to the broader public, a transformative event. Several important dates to keep in mind. One, of course, is the founding of Queens College in 1766. The second which is felt to be almost as important, is the first intercollegiate football game played in the U.S. when Rutgers beat Princeton, that was in 1869. I’d like to highlight another important milestone that was truly transformative to all of higher education in the United States and certainly to Rutgers at the time. (and higher education in New Jersey.) This was the Morrill Act of 1862, which established the land-grant institutions of higher learning to teach “agriculture and the mechanical arts (or engineering)”. Through this legislation a grant of public land was given to every state that remained in the Union, remember this was during the Civil War. NJ was given 210,000 acres out west, the sale of which provided funds to purchase land in NJ for experimental farms and to establish the programs in agriculture and the mechanical arts. Rutgers became the land grant institution in New Jersey. Prior to 1862, like the other 9 original colonial colleges, higher learning at Rutgers was dedicated to a classical education of liberal arts (history, classics, Latin, Greek, religion). Young men went to college to become church leaders, business leaders, governors and legislators. The Morrill Act was the first time that higher education was supported by the federal government. At that time, the leaders in government recognized that looking to the future, the needs of the nation that was becoming rapidly industrialized would require a work force that had practical and professional skills. And, as it happened, the Morrill Act radically and fundamentally changed higher education in this country. It establishing a new tradition, it opened up higher learning to the broader public and not to just the privileged few. The leaders of our country had foresight in 1862, to understand how higher education was critical for a growing and changing nation.

Rutgers, New Brunswick Rutgers is dedicated to teaching that meets the highest standards of excellence; to conducting research that breaks new ground; and to providing services and solutions that help individuals and the local, national, and global communities where they live. Only public New Jersey university in the Association of American Universities (AAU), a group comprising North America’s 62 leading research universities. Rutgers and Princeton are New Jersey’s only AAU members. Rutgers is a research-intensive university, with more than 300 research centers and institutes

Rutgers, New Brunswick Teaching Research Service To make a difference and to change lives Research To be at the frontier and change your field Service To serve our local and global communities These are the 3 foundational elements of public education and the land grant tradition. If you are a new asst professor, there is a review and reappointment in yr 3. Then in yr 6 there is a tenure review.
