Anatomy Brains – decision making control panel Eyes/ears – Sensors and detectors Central nervous system – cable network Cardiovascular System – Power supplies Muscles – Power switching panels (MCCs) Minimise single points of failure Protect critical functions Provide early warning and contingency planning Defined failure modes

Controls: Should be Application Specific – fire alarm systems are not always appropriate as life safety control systems Should be designed with resilience, backup and reliability Not BMS, BAS or HVAC/process control systems Open/Closed Protocol? Only operate on first activation (subsequent signals are locked out) Key enabled Firefighters override

Decision making system OPV Panel Controls the whole system Makes decisions based on a programmed cause and effect Displays the status of the system Allows the system to be overridden prEN12101-9

Expandable modular system to suit the needs of the project 230Vac Supply Expandable modular system to suit the needs of the project

OPV Control System Bespoke/unique design for smoke control - the system design is tailored specifically to this application  Configurable failsafe operation of the system – continues to operate in its last known state on loss of comms Configurable failsafe operation of individual vents and dampers, should the control panel, or the network connection from the panel, fail. Watchdog timers in all nodes (including sensors and control panels), to detect malfunctions or loss of data. Error detection and correction on all data links. Programmable CAE, with full boolean logic, allows for complex control algorithms and interactions, far more so than a fire alarm system.

OPV Control System Allows devices within a zone to be in different states, according to device type and CAE.   Allows for active closed as well as active open states (fire alarm systems typically only have active and standby states) 8 level priority system provides comprehensive prioritization of control Multiple thresholds per sensor allows various control states according to circumstances. Provides non-fire operation of vents and dampers, for day-to-day ventilation and air control.

Sensors and detectors Any Apollo addressable device can sit on the network: Smoke Detectors Heat Detectors Manual Call Points Override Switches I/O devices - allow switching of up to 3 24Vdc or 230Vac items and 3 inputs Pressure Sensors Temperature Sensors

Cable Network Comms and power networks must be protected. Should be installed with metal clips to maintain installation in a fire. Fire rated cabling to Category 3 of BS 8519 for Life Safety Systems. Tested under fire conditions for: Heat Water jet Impact 3 Phase Power Cables should be classed as F120 Comms/230Vac/24Vdc Cables should be PH120 +

Power Supplies BS 8519 Primary and Secondary sources Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) Diverse Routes Fire rated enclosures Battery back up Panels

Power Switching Panels – Motor Control Panels Used for switching high powered 3 phase fans No specific standard on construction

Phase failure relays Battery back up circuit protection Primary and standby supplies Primary and standby Inverters Current monitoring of fans Tri-rated cabling Fault Detection Form 2 as standard

External Weather protected panel GRP Enclosure Drip protection overhang Not IP rated

Form 4 – fully compartmented panel Each section can be isolated independently Very high performance standard Client specification driven – not a standard requirement Very high cost
