Presentation transcript:

Naming Molecular Compounds Molecular Compound also has common names – Ammonia, Water Systematic naming – They are composed of two or more non metals Their names have the form Prefix Name of 1st element Prefix Base name of 2nd element + -ide

Steps Write the element with the smallest group number first If the two elements lie in the same group, then write the element with the greatest row number first Write prefixes to indicate the number of atoms present If there is only one atom of the first element in the formula, the prefix mono is generally omitted

N2O - Dinitrogen Monoxide NI3 PCl5 P4S10 Name the compound N2O5 Examples : NO2 - Nitrogen dioxide N2O - Dinitrogen Monoxide NI3 PCl5 P4S10 Name the compound N2O5 Write the formula for Phosphorus tribromide

The compound NCl3 is nitrogen trichloride but AlCl3 is Aluminum chloride

HCl is an acid that forms H+ and Cl- ions when dissolved in water Naming Acids Acids are molecular compounds that releases hydrogen ions when dissolved in water HCl is an acid that forms H+ and Cl- ions when dissolved in water To distinguish between gaseous HCl ( Hydrogen Chloride) and aqueous HCl (Hydrochloric acid) we write HCl(g) for the former and the latter as HCl(aq)

Acids Acids has the ability to dissolve many metals They have a sour taste HCl present in stomach fluids HCl dissolves some metals such as Zn to form Zn2+ cations Acids can be classified in to two Binary acids and oxy acids

Base name of non-metal + -ic Binary acids – contains only two elements Oxy acids - contains oxygen Naming of binary acids - They are composed of H and a non metal and they have the form acid Hydro Base name of non-metal + -ic

Examples HCl HBr HI HF

Base name of oxyanion + -ice Base name of oxyanion + -ous Naming Oxy acids Oxyacids contain hydrogen and oxyanion(An anion containing oxygen and a non metal) Oxyanions ending with - ate Oxyanion ending with - ite HNO3 - Nitric Acid H2SO3 - Sulfurous Acid Base name of oxyanion + -ice acid Base name of oxyanion + -ous acid

Naming Oxyacids HC2H3O2 (aq) HNO2 (aq) Write the formula for per chloric acid

Inorganic Nomenclature Flow Chart

Use the flow chart to name each compound SO2 HClO4 CoF2 H2SO3

Formula Mass and Mole concept for Compounds Formula Mass – Average mass of a molecule of a compound( Its also called Molecular mass or molecular weight) For any compound, the formula mass is the sum of the atomic masses of all the atoms in the chemical formula Formula mass = (number of atoms of 1st element in chemical formula ×atomic mass of 1st element)+(number of atoms of 2nd element in chemical formula × atomic mass of 2nd element)

Formula mass of CO2 and Na2O Formula mass of CO2 = 12.01 amu+2(16.00amu) = 44.01amu Formula mass of Na2O = 2(22.99amu) + 16 amu = 61.98amu

Calculate the formula mass of Glucose? Calculate the formula mass of calcium nitrate?

Molar mass of a compound Mass in grams of 1 mole of its molecules or formula units is numerically equivalent to its formula mass The molar mass of CO2 = 44.01g/mol

Calculate the number of CO2 molecules in a sample of dry ice (solid CO2 ) with a mass of 10.8g?
