Preface: The world’s first Indian university was established in Takshila in 700 BC. The University of Nalanda built in the 4th century was one of the greatest achievements of ancient India in the field of education and was a great hub of knowledge centre. The 21st Century India has many such scientific institutions which have a long history tracing back to their origins to the colonial period. These have an astronomical collection of invaluable knowledge preserved in various formats. The Archives represents collections of all types of materials and resources, helping in documenting the history of the Institution from its past to the posterity. This need for indigenous archives will alone reflect indigenous perspectives. RRI has begun its journey of Archives with a goal to promote information for wider use.

PRESERVING RAMAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE ‘S SCIENTIFIC LEGACY GENESIS RRI archives took its inception from collecting the papers of Sir C.V. Raman and the historical records of the institute such as Annual Reports and Newspaper Clippings by building the Institutional Repository in the year 2006. We are in the process of incorporating , items in various formats such as manuscripts, photographs, maps, films, awards, framed materials, sketches, pictures, and instruments. Most of these items are of historical importance and environmentally sensitive .

We need to add the following collections to our archives: THE ARCHIVES In creating an archive, we require few suggestions and guidelines in order to help to preserve and maintain these vital records. There is a need to create a collection policy which can be applied for current records as well as those considered for archival purpose. We need to add the following collections to our archives: Photo Gallery – photographs from our archives; and Audio Recordings of lectures by Raman Various Documents Government Orders of Formation of the Institute Approval for Buildings and Finances

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1924 Honours and Awards: He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1924 Knighthood in 1929. Won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 Awarded the Franklin Medal in 1941 Awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954 He was also awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1957 Raman was Director of Indian Institute of Science 1933-1937

Honoured several honorary doctorates and memberships of scientific societies. Prof. C.V. Raman was the President of Indian Academy of Science from 1934-1970. Honorary Fellow, of IISC, 1959 National Science Day is celebrated on 28th February every year in memory of his discovery date of Raman Effect.
