Rethinking After-school Recreation What to do when everything is changing.

We’re Changing Too Recreation Department Program Changes (2008 – 2014) Afterschool Recreation 12 school sites (24 staff) to 3 park sites* (12 staff) Preschool: 4 (8 staff) sites to 2 (4 staff) Expanded use of RAC (year-round) and Splash (summer) as a result of renovations Expanded the number of instructional class offerings Initiated picnic shelter rentals Initiated Tiny Tot Sports Additional annual events: Lunar New Year, July 4th Parade, summer concerts (4), Fall Fiesta, Christmas Tree Lighting, Young Americans, Summer Survival Campout * Part-time staff costs for current program: $44,800/yr.

What We Propose Changing with the Community

After-school Recreation—Reduce to 1 Site Civic Center/RCRC Monday – Friday, 3 to 5 p.m. Variety of indoor/outdoor activities including recreation, academic (computer lab, volunteer tutors, etc.), and social Benefits Variety of amenities: RCRC Youth Room, Computer Lab, Library, Splash Pad, Open Space Continues to provide afterschool recreation services Addresses changes in and needs of community including academics and technology Better focuses limited resources No cost (some exceptions) Reduces current program expenditures by $30,000

After-school Recreation—Reduce to 2 Sites Rosemead and Garvey Parks Monday – Thursday, 3 – 5 p.m. Variety of traditional activities Benefits No cost Continues to provide afterschool recreation services Better focuses limited resources Reduces current program expenditures by $15,000

City-wide Sports Offer 4 to 5 seasons of varied sports May include skills workshops and camps Hosted at parks and gyms in Rosemead Monday–Thursday evenings and Saturdays 2-3 days weekly participation (practices and games)
