These mineral resources are found in potato shaped lumps and are recovered during undersea mining operations.

What are nodules?

This is a mineral deposit consisting of many veins within a rock formation.

What is a lode? As in, “I hit the mother lode”

These are energy resources formed from the remains of once living things.

What are fossil fuels?

This country, along with Russia and the U This country, along with Russia and the U.S, have the largest coal reserves.

What is China?

Hydrofracking or “fracking” is a controversial technique for extracting this resource in the U.S.

What is natural gas?

A well that is drilled to reach hot water heated by magma is harnessing this energy resource.

What is geothermal energy?

This is a fossil fuel formed by the remains of prehistoric organisms in shallow oceans and lakes.

What is petroleum or oil?

Deposits of this resource are formed by carbonization of plant remains.

What is coal?

This is the splitting of the nucleus of a large atom into two or more smaller nuclei to release energy.

What is nuclear fission?

This is used in an active solar system, but is not used in a passive system.

What is a solar collector?

By increasing the height of smokestacks, industries in the midwest reduced the local concentration of air pollutants. However, the pollution was carried by wind to the northeast where it contributed significantly to this.

What is acid rain?

The use of the energy resource leads to large quantities of radioactive waste which must be safely stored for thousands of years.

What is nuclear power?

This greenhouse gas is produced whenever coal, oil, and natural gas are burned.

What is carbon dioxide or CO2?

NOX (nitrous oxides) and SOX (sulfur oxides) are released when fossil fuels are burned. They contribute to this environmental problem.

What is acid rain?

Although we grow all our food in this resource, it becomes pollution when too much enters our streams and rivers.

What is dirt, soil, or sediment?

This is a mining method in which overlying rock material is stripped away to reveal mineral deposits.

What is surface mining?

Destruction of free-running rivers and their ecosystems is the greatest environmental impact of this resource.

What is hydropower?

Although wind turbines can kill birds and bats, the greatest environmental impact is this.

What is noise pollution?

Although this resource is pollution free during operation, manufacturing of the panels used to collect sunlight creates toxic waste.

What are photovoltaic cells?

Groundwater can be contaminated when this energy source, from deep within the earth, is collected.

What is geothermal power?

A process that reduces the amount of damage mining does to ecosystems by returning the landscape to “original condition.”

What is reclamation?

Destruction of free-running rivers and their ecosystems is a major disadvantage of what resource?

What is hydroelectricity?

Iron, copper and this metal are most often recycled

What is aluminum?

By 2050 experts predict that there will be a critical shortage of this resource.

What is water?

This is a specific thing you can do to conserve gasoline.
