Organizational Structure Professor: Zvi Aronson, Ph.D.

Authority vs. Power A right given based on position in an organization Ability to influence others Authority does not always = power.

Departmentalization: Definition and Forms Departmentalization refers to how jobs are grouped together. There are 5 main kinds of departmentalization: Functional Departmentalization Product Departmentalization Customer Departmentalization Geographic Departmentalization Process Departmentalization How jobs are grouped together is called departmentalization. There are five common forms of departmentalization (see Exhibit 5-2) although an organization may use its own unique classification. No single method of departmentalization was advocated by the early writers. The method or methods used should reflect the grouping that would best contribute to the attainment of the goals of the organization and the individual units.

What are Different Types of Authority Relationships? Line Authority Authority that entitles a manager to direct the work of an employee Staff Authority Positions with some authority that have been created to support, assist, and advise those holding line authority Chain of Command The line of authority extending from upper organizational levels to lower levels, which clarifies who reports to whom Span of Control The number of employees a manager can efficiently and effectively supervise Line authority entitles a manager to direct the work of an employee. It is the employer–employee authority relationship that extends from the top of the organization to the lowest echelon, according to the chain of command, as shown in Exhibit 5-3. As organizations get larger and more complex, line managers find that they do not have the time, expertise, or resources to get their jobs done effectively. In response, they create staff authority functions to support, assist, advise, and generally reduce some of their informational burdens.

Organizational Designs Simple Structure low departmentalization, wide spans of control, authority centralized in a single person, and little formalization Functional Structure groups similar or related occupational specialties together Product Divisional Structure made up of separate business units or divisions that are based on product line Geographic Division Structure Made up of separate business units or divisions that are based on geographic area served Matrix Structure Made up of groups that are managed on at least two different dimensions. (Individuals report to at least two superiors) Most companies start as entrepreneurial ventures using a simple structure, which is an organizational design with low departmentalization, wide spans of control, authority centralized in a single person, and little formalization. The simple structure is most widely used in smaller businesses and its strengths should be obvious. It’s fast, flexible, and inexpensive to maintain, and accountability is clear.

Means of Comparing Structures Specialization Dividing work activities into separate job tasks Formalization How standardized an organization’s jobs are and the extent to which employee behavior is guided by rules and procedures Centralization The degree to which decision making takes place at upper levels of the organization Decentralization The degree to which lower-level managers provide input or actually make decisions Formalization refers to how standardized an organization’s jobs are and the extent to which employee behavior is guided by rules and procedures. Centralization is the degree to which decision making takes place at upper levels of the organization. Decentralization is the degree to which lower-level managers provide input or actually make decisions.

Mechanistic vs. Organic “Mechanistic” and “Organic” are more generic ways of describing an organizational structure. Mechanistic organizations are high in specialization, formalization, and centralization; Organic organizations are low in specialization, formalization, and centralization.

Structural Contingency Theory Structural contingency theory explains that organization structure is influenced by a number of contingency factors within an organization, such as: Strategy Size of the Organization Technology Culture A common problem in organizations occurs when there is not proper alignment between structure and these contingency factors.
