Research Folders For the next 3 weeks, on your way into class, you will pick up your folder from your class section of the crate. Before leaving class, you will return your folder to your class section of the crate. Please place your folder in your correct class section neatly. Make sure you do not place your folder in another student’s folder.
Topic Compare the monster from Beowulf, Grendel, to a real-life monster. Your paper will argue how your real-life monster is similar to Grendel. Everyone will have a different real-life monster You will choose from a set list
Daily grades The research process will count for many daily grades Daily grades will be taken at the end of every class. Your grade will be 0 or 100 for the day. You must complete the assignment on day 1, before you can move on to the assignment for day 2. You must keep up! You will end up with a lot of 100s or a lot of 0s. This will be your choice.
Test grades Two TEST Grades Process grade: MLA Format, word count, appropriate thesis and paragraphs, etc. (refer to Research Packet) Content grade: well organized, well researched, well argued, correct grammar, spelling, etc. Students who choose not to complete the research paper will have a difficult time passing, not only the six weeks, but also the semester. This could affect your ability to graduate in May.
Attendance BE HERE! Due dates are FIRM! You have the entire research calendar with due dates. There is no excuse for not knowing something was due. IF YOU AREN’T HERE, DUE DATES DON’T CHANGE- IT’S DUE by THE end of the DAY (2:40 pm) that you return to school. If you are out for something school related (sports, field trip, etc.), your assignment is due the day before you will be out.
THE LIBRARY Choose your seat wisely. I will add words to your word count if you talk too much or sleep. If you fall behind, it will be necessary to complete portions of this assignment after school, over the weekend, or at home. The library is open three days a week after school. Public libraries are open after school and on the weekends. If you like to work at a slower pace- plan ahead- work after school or on the weekend.
Plagiarism Plagiarism is the use of another person’s original ideas or writing as one’s own without giving credit to the true author. Plagiarism is cheating and you will be subject to academic disciplinary action. Plagiarism is not always done on purpose. However, it is still considered cheating! Refer to your research packet for details. When it doubt- CITE THE SOURCE!
Final paper due date Your final paper is due: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7. It must be submitted to www.turnitin.com This is not optional. You will receive 0s if it is not submitted through turnitin.com
5 sources needed for research paper At least 2 book sources The literature book (AKA- your completed Grendel chart) One other book If your topic is hard to find in a book, you will need to look up the overall topic Example: Dennis Radar is a more recent serial killer and hard to find in books. You will need to find a quote from a book about serial killers in general (how they act, what they do, etc.) instead Your final 3 sources can come from reliable websites. You may use fewer internet sources and more books if you want.
