SUDAN’S DARFUR CONFLICT

Where? West of Sudan

WHO? Janjaweed X Non-arab population JANJAWEED: Militia group supported by the government Non-Arab population: Black African population

WHY? In 2003 a rebel group attacked the Sudan’s government (Arabs) saying that they were oppressing black Africans in favour of Arabs. 2 mains rebel groups: “Justice and Equality Movement “ and “Sudan Liberation Movement”

After those attacks the government initiated a retribution against that rebel groups and the non-Arab population. The government act behind the Janjaweed. But, they deny any link to them.

THE REAL REASONS Janjaweed are searching for water and lands to put their animals (food). But those lands belongs to black African people. SO… That’s why they are killing that people.

THE ATTACKS The Janjaweed ride into villages on horses and camels , slaughtering men, raping and abusing sexuality women, burning villages and stealing whatever they can. The survivors flee to refugee camps near Darfur’s main town and Chad.

THE REFUGEE CAMP NOT ENOUGH: Water Food Medicines Appalling Sanitation They can’t go out to search firewood or water More than 2 million refugees

HOW MANY HAVE DIED? Difficult question. Between 50.000 and 450.000 = 4 years of fight The governments of Sudan says the situation is being exaggerated.

African Union AMIS Peace talk started Sent 150 Rwandan troops in to protect the ceasefire monitors In April 2005, AMIS was increased to about 7,000

Any action? United Nations Decision was made in 2006 Sudan’s government Now…..
