COMETA Sara Pirrone INFN

COMETA COMETA, "Consorzio Multi-Ente per la promozione e l'adozione di Tecnologie di calcolo Avanzato“ It is a no-profit research centre founded in 2005. It's a consortium made up by public universities and research institutes, and private COMETA is devoted to promote and coordinate studies and research in the field of High Performance Computing, Grid, Cloud and GPU Computing, in their theoretical aspects and in applications too.

COMETA Infrastructure In these last few years, COMETA has realised  a so large e-Infrastructure distributed in seven sities in Sicily, and has acquired a so specialised know-how in distributed applications, such to  be placed as one of the most advanced research centers. The infrastructure is built with identical hardware and software on all grid sites. This choice allows interoperabilty and realises an homogeneous environment, a fundamental condition for an HPC grid environment. The high performance Infrastructure 2000 cores CPU storage >250 TB COMETA, "Consorzio Multi-Ente per la promozione e l'adozione di Tecnologie di calcolo Avanzato", is a no-profit research centre founded in 2005. It's a consortium made up by public universities and research institutes and private enterprises. Research activities are developed by COMETA inside specific research projects founded by european and/or national entities, or inside collaboration with private and public research centers and enterprises.

COMETA Infrastructure The infrastructure is built with identical hardware and software on all grid sites. This choice allows interoperabilty and realises an homogeneous environment, a fundamental condition for an HPC grid environment. 7 sites (Catania, Messina and Palermo) HPC clusters connected by the gLite grid middleware www.glite.org

COMETA Infrastructure ~2000 cores AMD Opteron 2218 Blade Center IBM 2 GB of RAM per core Infiniband-4X at all sites 250+ TB of raw disk storage

COMETA & IGI The Network The GRID

COMETA- Activity Industrial research and sperimental development realized also in European project or in PON or POR project of the Ministero dell’Università e Ricerca framework PI2S2 (www.pi2s2.it) PON 2000-2006. The main objectives of the project were the realisation of a Sicilian Virtual Laboratory based on GRID to support scientific applications. EPIKH, call FP7-PEOPLE –IRSES -2008 www.epikh.eu. Progetto MUSS (Mobilità Urbana ed Infraurbana Sostenibile e Sicura), is coordinated by Piaggio and founded by MISE inside "Industria 2015". EUMEDGRID-Support: www.eumedgrid.eu. DECIDE, www.eu-decide.eu. INDICATE, to establish a network of common interest made up of experts and researchers in the field of e-infrastructures and digital cultural heritage at Euro Mediterranean level www.indicate-project.eu. EarthServer www.earthserver.eu/ ICARO, POR Sicilia 4.1.1.1; www.progetto-icaro.it/ COMETA is involved inmany research project related to HPC, Grid and Cloud Computing. A not complete list is given in the following.

COMETA Activity 2. Virtual Data Center Part of the infrastructure is devoted to realization of Virtual Data Center. 3. Software Development Promote and coordinate studies and research in the field of High Performance Computing, Grid, Cloud and GPU Computing, in their theoretical aspects and in applications too. COMETA offers collaboration in the application design and development in HPC, Grid, GPU e Cloud Computing. Software Porting 4. Training Activity COMETA carries on dissemination activities about HPC, Grid, Clouds and GPU computing through specific training activities.
