Henkels in January, 1909, along with the library of Lewis C. Gratz. Drawings are listed at the end of the sale catalog where it is noted that they were being sold by order of Darley's widow. The above noted drawings are lot no.437 in the catalog. The items were purchased by the Folgers from a Freeman Co. sale in Philadelphia, June 22, 1909. (Formerly ART Inv. 445 & 444). Notes (Hamnet) This drawing is part of a set of 30 Darley illustrations which were reproduced as photogravures and published in New York and Philadelphia by Stoddart. The photogravures were sold, 30 plates in a box, folio size, with an imprint dated 1884, under the title 'Darley gallery of Shakespearean illustration'. Plates were issued in color and in black and white (some of which were filmed through color filters). A Shakespeare edition, published in New York by Amies in 1888, also contained these 30 illustrations along with designs by A. Chappell. The title page of the Amies edition notes that the illustrations are photogravures after wash drawings by Darley. Copies of the photogravures can be found in FSL ART Vol f80 and ART Inv. 447 (colored) and 448. The Shakespeare edition with Darley illustrations is PR 2752 1888e Sh.Col. Other Details This is one of the earliest known "artist books." "Pinky" Marcius-Simons, born in New York in 1867, began his career painting genre and architectural paintings. Later, while living in Bayreuth, Germany, he changed his style, producing more fanciful compositions. He died in Bayreuth in 1909, not long after having painted this binding on a readily available French edition of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The printed text is partially obscured by the gouache and watercolor paintings covering each page from edge to edge. All 90 pages, as well as the binding, depict colorful scenes from the play. Other Details The centerpiece tells the tragic story of Pyramus who "kills himself most gallant for love" (Shakespeare, MND I, ii, 23). Nixon describes the action depicted by the block, citing Arthur Golding's 1565 translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book IV. The Pyramus and Thisbe legend was well-known to the Elizabethan public and was used by Shakespeare in A Midsummer Night's Dream, written in 1595-96. The block shows Pyramus lying on the ground, apparently dead, and Thisbe committing suicide by falling on a sword. A lion runs away on the right. On the left, a statue of Cupid with bow and arrows stands in the middle of a fountain. The rebus-signature of the blockmaker, binder, or bookseller, "I S" on either side of a key (John Keyes?), can be seen on the trunk of a tree on the right. Only three other bindings with the Pyramus and Thisbe block are recorded: one on a copy of Ben Jonson's Workes, 1616, and the others on books of 1541 and 1600.
