South Africa’s Touism Hot Spot with a Troubled Past 導覽英文 授課老師:曾妍娟

South Africa Whether it’s the amazingly breathtaking views, fabulous beaches, or unique experience of walking among penguins, the South African city of Cape Town has a lot to offer tourists. Listed as a must-see on numerous websites for Cape Town is Table Mountain , which overlooks the whole city and can be accessed by a scenic cable car ride.

South Africa One of the added bonuses of taking the cable cars up to the top of the mountain is that they have revolving floors, allowing visitor great views of the city below. Once on top of the mountain , which is more than 1,000 meters at its highest point , visitors can take in more spectacular sights of South Africa’s second-largest city.

South Africa Besides Table Mountain , Cape Point , a narrow slice of land that has the distinction of being Africa’s most southwesterly point, is another location that is popular with tourists and locals a like. Fabulous views await visitors to Cape Point , which is also remarkable for it diversity and richness of vegetation. For those wanting to see more South African flora, the Kirsttenbosch Botanical Garddens is known as one of the Seven Magnificent Botanical Gardens of the World.

South Africa Being a coastal city, Cape Town has some magnificent beaches. A rare treat for tourists is venturing to Boulders Beach Penguin Colony to see African penguins. These creatures are a treat to watch play on the beach , but are unfortunately endangered . Other options for visitors to Cape Town include the V&A Waterfront , the city‘s most visited spot , and a city tour on a double-decker bus with an open top and featuring more than 30 stops.

South Africa Undoubtedly, the natural beauty of Cape Town is a big part of its attraction . However , another alluring aspect of the city is its history . While very little is known about the Cape region of South Africa before the arrival of the first Europeans more than five centuries ago, Cape Town recorded past is a complex mix of Portuguese , Dutch, and British influences.

Cape Town

South Africa This history is all mixed in with the more recent element of racial segregation, the notorious policy known as Apastheid, and eventually liberation. The area that is now named Cape Town first became known to the world when it was mentioned by Portuguese explorer Bartholomeu Dias in 1488. It wasn’t until 1652 that another European power , the Dutch , began to develop the area by bringing in a variety of species of useful and productive plant life.

South Africa In the 1800s, the British managed to take control of the region. One milestone in the history of the Cape Town region was the Great Trek,in which Dutch-speaking settlers migrated northward during the 1830s and 1840s in response to British rule. Another major event was the discovery of diamonds, which brought development and an influx of immigrants.

South Africa In the 20th century , Cape Town was infamous for Robben Island , once the home of numerous political prisoners, most famously Nelson Mandela spent 18 of the 27 years he was imprisoned on Robben Island ,which lies nine kilometers off the coast of Cape Town . The political activist was released in 1990 and later went on to become South Africa’s first black president after Apartheid. Cape Town has been desegregated for more than 20 yaers now, but unfortunately, some tensions still remain.
