Integrating Engineering into Physical Science EDMODO CODE:e35zty Maria Aguilar California Middle School Maria-aguilar@scusd.edu Mafe and Mike

Objectives: Integrate the engineering process in physical science curriculum. Design a cooler that will be delivered using a parachute system based on specific criteria and constraints. Mafe (5 minutes slides 2-4)

What is engineering? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wE-z_TJyziI Engineering for all! What is engineering? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wE-z_TJyziI Mafe ( 5 minutes for slides 2-4

The Engineering Design Process Ask Imagine Plan Create Improve Mafe (5 minutes slides 2-4)

Challenge (Read handout) South African Rangers needs artificial dwellings to help cool the penguins. The package will be delivered by a drone using a parachute. Mike (2 minutes slides 5-6)

Question (Write in handout.) How can you keep the ice from melting? How can you land the package safely on the ground? Mike (2 minutes slides 5-6)

There are penguins all over the world, not just in Antarctica. The red dots indicate where penguins live. There are penguins all over the southern hemisphere. Even in South Africa…

Boulders Beach is on the coast of South Africa. Photo credit: http://www.travelvenu.com/top-5-family-tourist-attractions-in-cape-town/ Video on Boulder’s Beach penguins (optional): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFd4Ibqi3Ig Here, the Boulders Beach penguins live. As the climate across the globe changes, these penguins are getting hot. To keep from overheating, they cool off in the water. But this survival technique has not worked in their favor…

Boulders Beach Penguins So the park rangers have built the penguins little houses to protect their eggs AND to help keep them cooler. The sea gulls are stealing their eggs! This is helping them survive!

Climate change is causing penguins in Antarctica to become endangered by eliminating available habitats Photo credit: http://www.doublexposure.net/edu_valdez.html

Brainstorm What prior knowledge or background do we expect our students to have experienced before this activity? Elementary Middle School High School (1 minute individually) Be prepared to share. (2 minutes) Mike 3 minutes

Connecting to the NGSS (NGSS Lead States 2013) Physical Science PEs: MS-PS1-2 MS-PS1-3 MS-PS1-4 MS-PS3-3 MS-PS3-5 Mafe = Example lesson, see yellow handout. 3 minutes slides 8,9

Connecting to the NGSS (NGSS Lead States 2013) Physical Science EPEs: MS-ETS1-1:Defining criteria and constraints MS-ETS1-2:Evaluating design solutions MS-ETS1-3: Analyzing data from tests Mafe = This is specific NGSS lesson. It is embedded in the unit lesson based on PEs and DCIs in focus. 3 minutes slides 8,9

FORM GROUPS OF 3. FIND YOUR GROUPMATES. Mike 2 minutes and distribute handouts

Challenge (Read handout) South African Rangers needs artificial dwellings to help cool the penguins. The package will be delivered by a drone using a parachute. Mike (2 minutes slides 5-6)

Integrating Engineering Into Physical Science “Investigating Heat Transfer” Plan:/Brainstorm ideas based on the: Criteria for success Constraints Mike = Define what criteria for success and constraints. 5 minutes slides 11-15

Criteria for Success: Design a shelter that will reduce heat transfer by keeping the ice from melting. Mike = copy in your handout 5 minutes slides 11-15

Constraints: maximum production cost = $10.00; use local materials (tested in previous investigations); shape can be a box, sphere, cylinder or combination but should not have a volume more than 5 in x 5 in x 5 in design, build and test a prototype within 1 class period. Mike = copy in your handout 5 minutes slides 11-15

Available “local” materials: See the budget chart = the quantity available is limited, decide as fast as you can Mike 5 minutes slides 11-15

Evidence: “Exploring Heat Transfer ” Data: See posters INBs Mafe = for consideration in your decisions use this data 1 minute

What to do: Design the prototype (10 minutes) Gather your materials (5 minutes) Build your prototypes (15 minutes) Test prototypes (15 minutes) Mafe 1 minute; They may present the design to either Mafe or Mike depending upon who is available.

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD What additional research is needed? What questions do you have? What needs to be redesigned? What worked? What did not work? Mike 1 minute

What to do: Redesign (5 minutes) Present/Gallery Walk your new ideas/designs (5 minutes) Mafe

NEXT STEPS IN YOUR CLASSROOM Mike 2-5 minutes; can be think pair share or group conversation
