Converting Celsius to Kelvin Aim: How do we convert from Celsius to Kelvin?

These are the three major temperature scales These are the three major temperature scales. We in the United States commonly use the Fahrenheit scale. However the rest of the world uses the Celsius scale. In science we do not use the Fahrenheit scale. We use either the Celsius scale or the Kelvin scale.

Temperature- the measure of the average kinetic energy of the molecules. HEAT FLOWS FROM HIGH TEMPERATURE → LOW TEMPERATURE UNTIL EQUILIBRIUM IS REACHED (POINT AT WHICH BOTH ITEMS ARE AT EQUAL TEMPERATURES).

Celsius Thermometers- BP & FP of H2O are the 2 fixed points on the thermometer. 0°C = freezing point, also ice-water at equilibrium 100°C = boiling point, also water-steam equilibrium

Kelvin Thermometers- use absolute temperatures as its fixed points. Kelvin = Celsius + 273 Reference table T

What is the Kelvin Temperature for 0°C (freezing point of water) What is the Kelvin Temperature for 0°C (freezing point of water)? What is the Kelvin Temperature for 100°C (boiling point of water)? What is the Kelvin Temperature for -40°C? Absolute zero:

What is the Kelvin Temperature for 0°C (freezing point of water) What is the Kelvin Temperature for 0°C (freezing point of water)? Kelvin = Celsius + 273 K = 0°C + 273 = 273 K What is the Kelvin Temperature for 100°C (boiling point of water)? K = 100°C + 273 = 373 K What is the Kelvin Temperature for -40°C? K = -40°C + 273 = 233 K
