OK everyone get ready to learn a new vocabulary term.

Celsius Today we will be learning about the Celsius scale.

Kelvin We’ll also learn about the Kelvin scale.

Absolute Zero And absolute zero.

Before we define the term plasma, let’s review some other words that you already learned, and make sure you are firm in your understanding.

kinetic energy: energy from motion Kinetic energy is energy from motion.

Kinetic energy is measured by mass,

and speed. speed

temperature: a measure of the average kinetic energy of moving particles Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of moving particles.

heat: the transfer of thermal energy from one object to another Heat is the transfer of thermal energy from one object to another.

Now let’s pause for a moment to review the information we have covered already.

What is temperature? What is temperature?

What is heat? What is heat?

Celsius First we are going to look at Celsius.

Celsius Let’s define Celsius scale.

Celsius: a measurement of temperature that uses 0° as the freezing point of water Celsius, or degrees Celsius, is a measure of temperature in which the freezing temperature of water is at 0 degrees and the boiling point of water is at 100 degrees.

Anders Celsius (1701-1744) The Celsius scale was developed by Anders Celsius, a Swedish astronomer.

Water freezes at 0° C On the Celsius scale, water freezes at 0 degrees. This is the same as 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Water freezes at 100° C And on the Celsius scale, water boils at 100 degrees. This is the same as 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

Celsius Although in the U.S., we usually use the Fahrenheit scale, the Celsius scale is used in most of the rest of the world to report the temperature.

Kelvin Now let’s look at the Kelvin scale.

Kelvin Let’s define Kelvin scale.

Kelvin: a scale used to measure temperature that starts at absolute zero (0 K) The Kelvin scale is also used to measure temperature, but it is a different scale from Fahrenheit and Celsius. On the Kelvin scale, the lowest temperature is called absolute zero. It is the same as -273.15 degrees Celsius, or -450.67 degrees Fahrenheit!

William Thomson, Lord Kelvin (1824-1907) The Kelvin scale was developed by William Thomson, who was also called Lord Kelvin. He was a British physicist and engineer.

Water freezes at 273 K Using the Celsius scale, water freezes at 273 K. That is the same as 0 degrees Celsius, or 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Water freezes at 373 K Using the Kelvin scale, water boils at 373 K. That is the same as 100 degrees Celsius, or 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

Absolute Zero Let’s take a closer look at absolute zero.

absolute zero Let’s define absolute zero.

absolute zero: the temperature at which kinetic energy cannot exist Absolute zero is the temperature at which kinetic energy cannot exist. No particles are moving, so there is no temperature.

absolute zero 0 K Absolute zero occurs at 0 K.

Now let’s review the information we have covered today.

Which one is not a scale used to measure temperature? Celsius Grams Fahrenheit Kelvin Which one is NOT a scale used to measure temperature?

Which one is not a scale used to measure temperature? Celsius Grams Fahrenheit Kelvin Grams is NOT a scale used to measure temperature.

Remember!!! So remember!

Celsius: a measurement of temperature that uses 0° as the freezing point of water Celsius, or degrees Celsius, is a measure of temperature in which the freezing temperature of water is at 0 degrees and the boiling point of water is at 100 degrees.

Kelvin: a scale used to measure temperature that starts at absolute zero (0 K) The Kelvin scale is also used to measure temperature, but its lowest point is 0 K, or absolute zero.

absolute zero: the temperature at which kinetic energy cannot exist Absolute zero is the temperature at which kinetic energy cannot exist. No particles are moving, so there is no temperature.
