How we teach reading at Bedfont Primary School http://mrthorne.com/home/phonics/introduction/
Welcome and thank you for coming to our meeting. We aim to cover: Phonics Reading Parental involvement We are happy to answer any questions that you might have.
Introduction As parents or carers you are your child’s most influential teacher with an incredibly important role to play in helping your child to read.
Influence your child to take an interest. Let your child see you read books, magazines, they will want to do what you are doing they love to copy grown ups. Choose a quiet time everyday to read a story, always read with enthusiasm and use lots of expression. Join the library and talk about the books they choose. When your child brings home a reading book, communicate with the teacher regularly with positive comments and of any concerns, this shows your child you value their reading. Allow your child to read a favourite book again to build confidence and stamina.
What are phonics? Phonics is the understanding of how letters combine to make words. We use Letters and Sounds throughout the school to teach phonics along with cued articulation Each sound is accompanied buy a visual sign. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBJ9-SBe2eI
Why Phonics? The aim is to secure essential phonics knowledge and skills so that children can progress quickly to independent reading and writing. Reading and writing are like a code: phonics is teaching the child to crack the code. Gives us the skills of blending for reading and segmenting for spelling.

Summary of Phonics Phase 1 (on-going) To distinguish between sounds and become familiar with rhyme, rhythm and alliteration. Phase 2 (6 weeks) To introduce 19 grapheme-phoneme correspondences. Phase 3 (12 weeks) To teach one grapheme for each of the 44 phonemes in order to spell simple regular words. Phase 4 (4-6 weeks) To read and spell words containing adjacent consonants. Phase 5 (in Yr1) To teach alternative pronunciations for graphemes and alternative spellings for phonemes. Phase 6 (in Yr2) To develop their skill and automaticity in reading and writing.
Phonics Letter formation Children will begin to learn how to use and hold their pencil correctly. They will learn through play how to form letters. Children are encouraged to write in gloop, sand, jelly and with a variety of implements. Above all our aim is to encourage a desire to write.
Reading Our aim is to create children who will become confident independent readers. Not all children develop at the same time or pace. Fun discovering print all around you: the bus stop, labels at the supermarket, traffic signs, instructions etc. You will be amazed at how much your child can already read
How you can help your child. Try and aim to read with your child every day to encourage enjoyment in reading Choose a quiet time Read to them first, then let them re-tell the story Talk about the pictures Talk about what they think might happen next Run your finger under the words Encourage your child to tackle unknown words, by using their knowledge of letter sounds, reading on and looking at the picture – TELL your child the word if they need it
An introduction to…
What is bug club? Bugclub is a reading programme that can be used in school and at home. It helps to develop your child's reading and comprehension skills. Bugclub has a wide range of books at different graded levels. Children will be allocated books that match their current reading level.
Reading Bugclub books at home Inside the front cover are things you can do to support your child when reading. You can: Practice high frequency words Practice the sounds they are going to encounter. You can also use the games and questions for discussions when you read at home with your child
Phonics Bug Phonics Bugclub books contain a guide to help your child read the sounds found in the book. When reading online there will be a quiz question that focuses on word skills.
Logging into Bugclub Children will be given their own login details so they can sign into Bugclub when at home or in school.
Using Bugclub online If you have access to the internet at home children can log onto Bugclub and enjoy reading books and completing different questions found in the eBooks. The quiz questions help them practice their reading skills. The questions all match to the reading level of the books. The books are also audio books, so children can enjoy hearing an expressive reading of the story. All teachers will try to allocate time for children to use Bugclub when possible.
Don’t Forget . . . Be positive – don’t keep saying “no, that’s wrong” – boost your child’s self-confidence, it will make such a difference. Children learn best when they have fun – don’t make reading a chore. Success is the key – don’t keep providing books that are too hard to read – re-read easier books and old favourites. Join the library – you will always have a supply of new reading material.
