Volcanos, Earthquakes & Tsunamis

Volcano: a mountain or hill, typically conical, having a crater or vent through which lava, rock fragments, hot vapor, and gas are being or have been erupted from the earth's crust.

Earthquake: A sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action.

Tsunami: A huge sea wave that is very tall and height and has extreme power. A tsunami is formed when there is ground uplift and quickly following, a drop. From this, the water column is pushed up above the average sea level.

How do Earthquakes happen? Take notes on the following from the next 2 short videos: Terms: Faults Seismic waves Richter scale Seismic scale Hypocenter Understanding: What happens when plates collide? What happens when plates diverge (& where does this happen)? What causes earthquakes to occur? Approximately how many earthquakes happen every year?

Article with questions about the Tsunami Article with questions: Japan Earthquake & Tsunami of 2011: Facts and Information Answer these questions based on the Article: 1. How far away were the effects of the Tsunami felt? 2. How can studying history help prepare countries for events such as a tsunami? 3. How are the effects of the Tsunami still being felt in Japan 4 years later? 4. What was the cost in Japan in terms of lives, infrastructure and money? 5. How high were the “run up heights” and how far inland did the tsunami travel? 6. What caused the Tsunami? 7. How has Japan responded to the disaster?
