Russia, Spain, Britain, and the U.S. had land claims in the Oregon Country. U.S. and Britain pursued their claims. In 1818, Britain and U.S. agreed to share Oregon Country for 10 years. Spain and Russia gave up their claims in 1825.

Oregon Fever A. Throughout the mid-1800’s, thousands of Americans carved out settlements in the Oregon Country. Between 1840 and 1860, more than 60,000 people traveled the Oregon Trail. B. During their journey west, settlers faced numerous hardships. Many died of diseases such as cholera and smallpox. C. For the most part, Native Americans helped the settlers. Eventually, however, relations soured and fighting between the two groups erupted.

These paths become the roads on which future settlers would follow. C. In the late 1830’s and 1840’s, people stopped wearing fur hats. As a result, the mountain men found themselves out of work. Some turned to farming, while others guided wagon trains. The route they knew best was the Oregon Trail. It soon became the major highway across the continent.

The British agreed to give the United States all of the Oregon territory south of the Canadian border. Oregon became a U.S. territory in 1848 and a state in 1859.
