Jewish life for me Jenny Tooth-Lund

Passover At Passover we celebrate how the Jews escaped from Egypt after King Herod made them slaves. We have a special family dinner, where we eat special foods and tell the story of Moses and the Exodus, this is the story of how God helped the Jewish people escape. We also remember all the people in the world today who aren’t free. It is a big celebration to remember. It is important for everyone to be free to live the life they want to live.

Symbols you see on the table at at Passover Elijah’s cup is filled to welcome news of the messiah Special candles Our Hagadah explains what to do and say at the dinner The ‘sedar’ plate

Passover teaches Jewish history. The youngest person has a special job of asking four questions: Each question starts “why is this night different from all other nights” and the answers explain what Passover is about. In our family that used to be my job. Now Solly, my little brother, gets to ask.

In the winter we celebrate Hanukah Hanukah is the Jewish festival of lights. It takes place around Christmas time. For eight nights we light a candle on a Menorah. Ours has been in our family for generations (it was my great, great grandma’s).

We eat special food like We get given Hanukah Gelt (chocolate money) Potato latkes are fried potato cakes that we eat with smoked salmon or apple sauce

We play Dreidel The Hebrew letters spell a special message, and you can win sweets!

Jews celebrate in different ways but believe lots of the same things as Christians. The ten commandments are the same – we just write ours in Hebrew!
