Pearl Harbor On the morning of December 7th, 1941 Japan attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

Effects of the Attack: The most important thing about the attack is that the US officially entered WWII. The attack had destroyed/damaged much of the American Pacific Fleet Japan now controlled most of the Pacific, but no U.S. aircraft carriers were destroyed. The US & Allies decide on a Europe First Strategy. Only the Navy would be used in the Pacific.

Bataan Death March After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor they capture of the Philippines Hundreds American & over 10,000 Filipinos were captured & forced to march the 65 mile Bataan Peninsula. They weren’t given food or water. Many were tortured & thousands died. Many Filipino civilians risked their lives to sneak food to the soldiers.

Bataan Death March

Coral Sea Australia was a key area for the U.S. and the Allies to refuel, re-supply, and rearm. The Japanese looked towards taking Australia and met U.S. forces just off the northeast coast in the Middle of the Coral Sea. Over May 7th and 8th, 1942, American Naval forces stopped the Japanese advance on Australia.

The US fleet in the Coral Sea

The Battle of Midway Island This great air and sea battle became the turning point of the war in the Pacific. U.S. planes were able to sink all four of the Japanese aircraft carriers and many other support vessels. This victory reestablish American naval supremacy in the Pacific.

“Island Hopping” After Midway the U.S. began liberating areas by “hopping” from island to island. They were heavily defended and included Iwo Jima, Solomon Islands, Saipan, and Guam.

Beginning of the End The U.S. Navy had at this point retaken all of the islands in the South Pacific. As a result they were able to set up a naval blockade and cut off the flow of raw materials to Japan Now it was just a matter of determining how to get them to surrender.
