CHÂTEAU BARREYRES MÉDOC Château Barreyres lies in the village of Arcins, with vineyards bordering the Moulis and Margaux appellations.

CHÂTEAU BARREYRES MÉDOC EXTRAORDINARILY APPEALING A favourite with Pierre Castel and his wife – a majestic residence evoking the traditional French lifestyle Unique geographical location and geology, overlooking the Gironde like the greatest of the Médoc Grand Crus Barreyres wines reflect the story of Pierre Castel himself – a powerful presence in France and Africa An Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois with a very elegant profile, reminiscent of its neighbours in Margaux

CHÂTEAU BARREYRES MÉDOC HISTORY Acquired in 1971. The name Barreyres comes from a Gascon form of the word for barrier. A majestic 19th century structure, now fully restored with the addition of parkland and a lake.

Winemaking Consultant CHÂTEAU BARREYRES MÉDOC VINTAGE 2012 TO SERVE CLIMATE A cold, rainy spring held up flowering. Ripening progressed slowly until June. Beautiful weather in August and at the beginning of September gave the grapes a chance to catch up. Maximum temperatures were particularly high in the second half of August just after mid-veraison (3 weeks later than 2011). Harvests were earlier than in previous years, when unsettled conditions towards the end of the season brought them to a hasty close. HARVEST DATES Merlots: from October 4th Cabernet Sauvignons: from October 9th BLEND 55% Merlot 45 % Cabernet-Sauvignon OUR EXPERT SAY « 2012 is a particularly interesting vintage for Château Barreyres. The cold weather, combined with the quality of the gravel on the plateau has yielded some exceptionally elegant wines, structured around the flavours of small red berry fruits and a silky vein of tannins. The Merlots were especially good, and played a major part in the success of the vintage.  » 17°C 5-10 years 13% vol 1 hour 30 TASTING NOTES Purple in colour. Open on the nose with appealing aromas of fresh fruit and the characteristic features of a good pedigree. Well-structured and full of charm on the palate. Delicious flavours of black fruit with smooth, tightly-knit tannins. Well balanced; full of freshness; excellent ageing potential. Bruno Teyssier Director Antoine Mèdeville Winemaking Consultant

CHÂTEAU BARREYRES MÉDOC VINTAGE 2012 NOTES MEDALS 87 Silver Medal 14,5 Concours de Macon « A fresh and clean red with vanilla, berry and citrus character. Medium body, fine tannins and a simple finish. Drink or hold.» 14,5 « A new style of wine is starting to emerge: traditional, charming, typically Médoc in style. A welcome return to the classics. » 14 « Classic Medoc. Structure is influenced by the 45% of Cabernet. This is a Castel family property and remains fairly traditional, with balanced wines and good length. »

Winemaking Consultant CHÂTEAU BARREYRES MÉDOC VINTAGE 2013 TO SERVE CLIMATE Cumulative annual rainfall was higher than the 30-year average (179 days compared to 124 days, the 30-year average). Autumn and the start of winter were particularly cold and rainy. The beginning of April was more like a continuation of winter – very cold, with 35mm of rain. The rain stopped in mid-April, just in time to allow for bud-break; but there was still little sign of spring. May and June were humid, with 32 days of rain (compared to the seasonal norm of 19 days) and were the coldest since 1984. Summer finally arrived in July. The weather was very hot and dry, with violent storms breaking out at the beginning of August. September and October were mild and humid, contributing to the development of grey mould. HARVEST DATES Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon: September 30th – October 15th BLEND Merlot: 51% Cabernet-Sauvignon: 49% OUR EXPERT SAY « This year, tasting was the key to success for Château Barreyres, even more so than in other years. Each vat was tasted several times a week to check for body and texture, and enhanced by the regular stirring in of lees (batonnage), performed every two days. The decision to draw off the wine is an important one – second only to deciding on the right harvest date – and is made when the wine has reached the right degree of roundness on the palate. Our vineyard management methods, together with the role played by regular, frequent tastings, have produced a delightful, fruit-filled wine.» 17 °C 3 - 6 years 12,5 % vol 1 hour TASTING NOTES A very pleasing deep crimson colour. Full of deliciously fruity aromas including blackcurrants and forest fruits. This Cru Bourgeois is known for its charming, elegant character. The palate is pleasingly well-structured, and flavours include cooked fruit and strawberry compote. Very well balanced: powerful yet highly elegant. One of 2013’s success stories. Bruno Teyssier Director Antoine Mèdeville Winemaking Consultant

CHÂTEAU BARREYRES MÉDOC VINTAGE 2013 NOTES MEDALS GUIDE HACHETTE 2017: 1 STAR « With Merlot as its major component (55%) this 2013 develops aromas of roasted coffee alongside black fruit before showing its true colours on the palate. Fleshy, full, smooth and balanced, this wine is already extremely appealing, but could also be cellared for future enjoyment. » Silver Medal Challenge international du vin 2015

Winemaking Consultant CHÂTEAU BARREYRES MÉDOC VINTAGE 2014 TO SERVE CLIMATE The year was divided into two very distinct ‘seasons’: the growing season which got off to a dank, cold start, and the hot, sunny weather that followed at the end of summer and beginning of autumn. These sharply contrasting conditions have shaped the character of 2014’s wines. Cool temperatures inhibited shoot growth; growth was particularly slow in April and May as both months were cold and damp. As the weather warmed up the vines began to grow more rapidly, notably from June 10th onwards. June remained warm and sunny. Temperatures fell again in July, and growth slowed once more. There was little rainfall as grapes ripened. September and October weather was exceptionally dry and sunny, and unlike the right bank, the left bank was spared September’s 50mm rainstorm. HARVEST DATES Merlot: 29th September – 4th October Cabernet: 6th – 10th October BLEND Merlot: 51% Cabernet-Sauvignon: 49% OUR EXPERT SAY « When the grape harvest is of such high quality, winemaking is an absolute delight. It was a pleasure to blend the mellow, fruit-packed Merlots with the Cabernet Sauvignons which had been helped along no end by the Indian summer. They give the Château Barreyres wines good depth of colour, along with complexity on the nose and density on the palate. » 17 °C 5 - 10 years 13 % vol 1 hour 30 TASTING NOTES Château Barreyres 2014 shows a sumptuous deep purple colour. Open on the nose with appealing scents of fresh red fruit alongside classic features associated with well-managed aging. This is a fine, elegant Cru Bourgeois with a very pleasing profile, including good structure and a full body. The finish is remarkably persistent. Bruno Teyssier Director Antoine Mèdeville Winemaking Consultant
