Missouri Compromise 1820 Slavery would be permitted in Missouri. - Maine was created and admitted to the union as a free state. - Compromise keeps the balance between free and slave states equal.

Santa Fe Trail After Mexican Independence, many Americans went to Mexico for economic opportunities. By 1830’s caravans of wagons traveled along the Santa Fe Trail which linked Independence, Missouri and Santa Fe. Because of strong American presence, US had strong ties to Texas, California, and New Mexico before gaining political control of them. By 1835, 30,000 Americans had come to Texas to live and trade.

Oregon Country Oregon trail that stretched 2,000 miles starting in Independence, Missouri. Journey took up to 6 months to make and cost anywhere between $500-$1000 per family. VERY expensive. Treaty of 1846 divided Oregon Country at the 49th Parallel with England.

Texas Independence -General Santa Anna comes to power and takes away rights of self- government of Texas. Texas claims their Independence and war breaks out. Remember the Alamo! Battle lasted 13 days, all Texans killed in attack including famous frontiersman Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, and Colonel William Travis.

Mexican-American War President Polk urges Congress to declare war, May 13, 1846. Bear flag revolt takes place in Cali, Generals Fremont and Kearny take Cali and NM. General Zachary Taylor crosses Rio Grande engages Mexican Army.

Mexican-American War General Winfield Scott takes Mexico City March 1847 which ends the war. US gains control of California and NM in Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo 1848. Establishes Rio Grande as southern border of US and Texas.

Gadsden Purchase 1853 $10 million for southern NM and Arizona. US now has established continental US boundaries.

California Gold Rush -1848 Gold is discovered in California. -Most important event in attracting settlers West. - Within a year population rose from 14,000 to 100,000 after gold is discovered.

California Gold Rush -“forty-niners” were people that went to California during the gold rush. -Increased immigration of Chinese to the US. By 1852 10 percent of Californians were Chinese.
