RN to BSN Program Overview and Application Requirements Updated July 17, 2017

Welcome and thank you for your interest in our RN to BSN Program! The purpose of this PowerPoint is to provide an overview of the RN to BSN program and application requirements. Applicants who have further questions about the program are encouraged to attend an optional advising session at Sacramento State, Folsom Hall. Please check our website for dates and room location of advising sessions. www.csus.edu/hhs/nurs/prog Applicants may also email us at RNtoBSN@csus.edu with questions.

OVERVIEW of RN to BSN PROGRAM Our program is designed to advance the Associate Degree RN to the next level in the profession and leadership roles. Our curriculum is designed with the flexibility to meet the needs of the working RN. Students have the option to attend the program full-time (degree completion in 2 semesters) or part-time (degree completion in 3 or more semesters). Graduates of our RN to BSN program are eligible to apply for California Public Health Nurse (PHN) Certificate if they successfully complete the community health clinical course (NURS 174C) along with other required coursework. The RN to BSN program is accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate Nursing Education http://www.aacn.nche.edu/ccne-accreditation

OVERVIEW of RN to BSN PROGRAM Courses in the program are blended – approximately 70% of coursework will be online and 30% face to face. All students are required to attend an initial orientation meeting in addition to the face to face classes. All face to face classes occur on Wednesdays, typically every other Wed. during the first semester and one Wed. a month during the second semester.

SUGGESTED FULL-TIME PATTERN Note: Altering the sample curriculum pattern may lengthen the time required for completion. Semester 1 Semester 2 NURS 170: Foundations for Evidence-Based Nursing Practice (3 units)* NURS 171: Transitional Concepts: The Baccalaureate Nurse (6 units) NURS 174: Community Health Nursing: Concepts and Practice (4 units) NURS 174C: Community Health Nursing: Clinical Elective (2 units)** 1st Upper GE course (3 units) Total = 18 units NURS 173: Theoretical Foundations for Leadership and Management (6 units) NURS 179: Professional Communication and Reasoning Development (3 units)*** NURS 178: Culminating Project (3 units)**** 2nd Upper GE course (3 units) Total = 15 units ***WPJ exam must be taken prior to enrolling in NURS 179 ****NURS 178 must be taken during the last semester of nursing courses *NURS 170 must be taken during the 1st semester **NURS 174C is a clinical course (90 hours); course required for PHN certificate; students may file an exemption to not take NURS 174C Note: Students automatically receive 19 units for completion of the NCLEX

SUGGESTED PART-TIME PATTERN We recommend RNs who work full-time to consider attending the program part-time. Semester 1 Semester 3 NURS 170: Foundations for Evidence-Based Nursing Practice (3 units) NURS 171: Transitional Concepts: The Baccalaureate Nurse (6 units) Total = 9 units NURS 174: Community Health Nursing: Concepts and Practice (4 units) NURS 174C: Community Health Nursing: Clinical Elective (2 units) NURS 179: Professional Communication and Reasoning Development (3 units) NURS 173: Theoretical Foundations for Leadership and Management (6 units) NURS 178: Culminating Project (3 units) Total = 9 units Two upper GE courses (6 units) (may be taken earlier if blended with required BSN course during 1st thru 3rd semesters) Total = 6 units Semester 2 Semester 4

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS NURS 170 is a required first course in the program. May be taken concurrently with other courses except for NURS 178. NURS 178 is the required last nursing course. May be taken concurrently with other courses except for NURS 170. NURS 174C: This clinical course must be taken concurrently with the theory course (NURS 174) or the very next semester after completing NURS 174. Students may apply for an exemption to not take NURS 174C as part of their program of study. It is important to note that students who do not complete NURS 174C will not be eligible to apply for a Public Health Nurse certificate from the Board of Registered Nursing. NURS 179: Writing Intensive: Completion of the Writing Placement for Juniors (WPJ) is a pre-requisite for enrollment. Meets GE Area E.

WRITING PLACEMENT FOR JUNIORS (WPJ) The Writing Placement for Juniors (WPJ) exam must be taken before enrolling in NURS 179. Enrollment in NURS 179 is contingent upon the score received on the WPJ. Students are encouraged to take the WPJ during their first semester. Students who already have a BA/BS in another field are exempt from the WPJ requirement.

GE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE RN TO BSN PROGRAM Applicants who have not had a GE evaluation are encouraged to have a GE evaluation prior to applying to the RN to BSN program. Click here for information regarding General Advising for transfer students. Be sure to bring your unofficial transcripts to your GE advising session. 3 upper division GE courses are required (NURS 179 serves as an upper GE for area E). Students who already have a BA/BS do not have to take the 2 additional upper GE course besides NURS 179. GE courses may be taken anytime, during fall, winter, spring, or summer semesters. You may consult with a GE advisor about which GE courses to take. Note: The graduation requirement for foreign language is waived for the RN to BSN program.
