We have had an unprecedented level of sickness of staff (or of immediate family) in the School. I think we are through the worst of this but the ramifications are still being felt. Other staff have had to take on extra work (sometimes at very short notice) and I have been very grateful for this.

Research Excellence Framework (REF) This was submitted at the end of last year Prof Brent Murray was our lead academic and was responsible for writing our submission Results will start to come out mid-December, 2014 Research ‘Impact’ was the new issue that we had to deal with Fingers crossed!

Student Numbers

Some 11500 places at the Russell Group of leading Universities were left empty this year because of the Governments higher education reforms, a vice-chancellor has said. Sir Howard Newby, from the University of Liverpool, said it was an ‘unintended consequence’ of the overhaul of the university sector, and warned that ‘there could be a further round of empty places next year’. (slide from last year’s meeting)

2014 A-Levels (All our courses are now ABB minimum) Less ABB+ students We did well, exceeding target again A lot of Russell Group Universities went into ‘clearing’ for at least some subjects (FS&N didn’t) Next year, our BSc Nutrition will be AAB Next year, no quotas at all – the government has removed the limit on students with less than ABB
