How we promote reading for pleasure
New Curriculum: Pupils should be taught to: develop positive attitudes to reading and understanding of what they read.
Ways we promote the enjoyment of reading: ERIC Book Week World Book Day Poetry Week Visiting authors/poets Reading environment Reading scheme Reading Badges
How we organise reading in school • Phonics- (FS/KS1) • Individual reading • Guided reading • Independent (silent) reading • Personal reading for pleasure • Reading across the curriculum • Class novels and stories • STAR reading • Accelerated Reader Quizzes The hearing of reading is NOT the teaching of reading!
Reading Scheme: Year 3 – Oxford Reading Tree Year 4 – Oxford Reading Tree/Library readers Year 5 & 6 – Mainly library readers, some stay with the Oxford Reading Tree
However... ... In Key Stage 2, reading is not just about the decoding of a text. Your child might be able to read all texts but understanding is key!
What skills does my child use when reading? Motor skills (follow word 1:1, left to right) Phonic (sounds and spelling of letters in words) Knowledge of context (pictures, know how books work, guess what comes next.) TEXT (Story or book) Grammatical Knowledge (does it sound right?) Word recognition and graphic knowledge (know what words look like, shape of words)

WHY IS IT SO SPECIAL? It reminds me of... I can forget everything else... I can imagine that... I can learn more about... I can be someone else... 19
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP YOUR CHILD? Make the experience pleasurable Find a comfortable place Give plenty of time Avoid interruptions (no TV; siblings (unless purposeful choice); cooking dinner; other cars on the road; etc) Keep the time positive Stay clear of ‘competition’ and comparisons with the ability of others Share a wide variety of material Library 20
