History of movement: lgbtq before and after marriage equality We the People Summit June 24, 2017

BCE - 1937 2400 BCE - Ancient Egyptian tomb is dedicated to two men with paintings showing them embracing in intimate ways. 27 BCE - First recorded same-sex marriages during Roman Empire of Augustus. 342 CE - First Law against homosexual acts is created by Christian Emperor Constans. 1937 - Nazis use pink triangle to mark gay men in concentration camps. When camps were liberated, gay men were not freed and were forced to finish “sentence.”

1973-1993 1950 – LGBT listed as “subversive perverts.” 4,380 discharged from military, 420 fired from gov. positions. 1950s – FBI and police kept lists of known LGBT, their favored establishments, and US post office tracked “homosexual mail.” June 28, 1969 – Stonewall riots, violent demonstrations led by trans women of color in NYC against police. *Beginning of the gay liberation movement in the US. 1970 – First Pride Parade marches took place in NYC, LA, and Chicago to commemorate Stonewall Riots.

1973-1993 January 1, 1973 - Maryland becomes the first state to ban same-sex marriage. January 14, 1975 - The first federal gay rights bill is introduced to address discrimination based on sexual orientation, but is never brought for consideration. March 2, 1982 - Wisconsin becomes the first state to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation. 1981-1989 Reagan Administration – “My criticism is that [the gay movement] isn’t just asking for civil rights; it’s asking for recognition and acceptance of an alternative lifestyle which I do not believe society can condone, nor can I.”

HIV/AIDS epidemic & the Reagan administration 1981 - 1984 1985 - 1989 1990 First cases of HIV/AIDS noticed by the CDC in 1981. The term AIDS used for first time in 1982, linked to blood transmission. HIV discovered in 1983. Reagan never mentions AIDS publicly during these years. 7,642 known deaths. Reagan finally addresses AIDS in 1985. Calls it, “public enemy number one” in 1987. 42,732 known deaths. Reagan publicly apologizes for his neglect of the HIV/AIDS epidemic during his presidency.

1996-2000 September 21, 1996 - President Bill Clinton signs the Defense of Marriage Act, banning federal recognition of same-sex marriage. December 3, 1996 - Hawaii becomes the first state to rule that the state does not have a legal right to deprive same-sex couples the right to marry. April 26, 2000 - Vermont becomes the first state to legalize civil-unions between same-sex couples.

2003-2006 June 2003 - The US Supreme Court strikes down the "homosexual conduct" law, which decriminalizes same-sex sexual conduct, in Lawrence v. Texas. April 22, 2005 - Section 3 of the Dine Marriage Act states "marriage between persons of the same sex is void & prohibited.“ This applies to the Navajo Nation. October 25, 2006 - The New Jersey Supreme Court rules that state lawmakers must provide the rights and benefits of marriage to gay and lesbian couples.

2008-2011 May 15, 2008 - The California Supreme Court rules that limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples is unconstitutional. November 4, 2008 - Voters approve Proposition 8 in California, which makes same-sex marriage illegal. August 4, 2010 - Proposition 8 is found unconstitutional by a federal judge. September 20, 2011 - "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is repealed, ending a ban on gay men and lesbians from serving openly in the military.

2013-2015 June 26, 2013 - The US Supreme Court strikes down section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, ruling that legally married same-sex couples are entitled to federal benefits. October 6, 2014 - Same-sex marriage is legal in Utah, Oklahoma, Virginia, Indiana and Wisconsin, Colorado, Kansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia and Wyoming. June 26, 2015 - The Supreme Court rules that states cannot ban same-sex marriage.

Employment Arizona does not have employment non-discrimination policy for sexual orientation and gender identity. Protection only for state employees based on sexual orientation only. Resources Francisco, update this text with local resources/orgs in and out of TQP (for every slide here on out)

HOUSING Arizona does not prohibit housing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Resources Francisco put local resources here

HEALTHCARE Arizona has neither a ban on insurance exlusions for transgender healthcare nor does it provide transgender inclusive health benefits to state employees. Administration is threatening access to PrEP and HIV treatment for gay men. Resources here:

education Arizona does not have a law that addresses discrimination against students based on sexual orientation and gender identity. State does not have a law addressing harassment and/or bullying of students based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Hate Crimes – AZ has a law protecting sexual orientation only. Resources – reformat if need more room so we don’t lose font size (no smaller than size 16).

Become educated on hot topics, policies, and struggles the LGBT community is facing. Speak Up! If you hear something, say something. Educated on the transgender community, terms, struggles, policies. Know when something is funny vs. hurtful. Create change. Influence Policy. Active in your community. Engage, participate, and lead in LGBT organizations.

Tucson Pride is in September Rainbows fest in October along with AIDS Walk (but those are Phoenix Pride events, at least Rainbows fest is, AIDS walk is a separate org).
