Verner Panton What has influenced his style Personal inspiration Beat generation. In the 1950’s and 60’s many young people chose to experiment with a different lifestyle to their parents. Panton tried to sell his work by travelling around Europe and finding contacts and customers as he went along. He learned a lot and met other designers who helped him to be successful Influential Art and Design movements Panton was taught by Poul Henningsen at art college. He was influenced by Henningsen’s crisp, clean, minimal and industrial style. Panton worked with Arne Jacobsen. Jacobsen would constantly research new materials and technologies. This desire to explore new materials influenced Panton. Op art. A 1960’s -70’s art movement. Op artists explored optical illusions to create eye catching, abstract images. Pop art. A 1950’s 70’s art movement. Pop artists used everyday culture to inspire their work. Newspaper images, food packaging, comics are some of the areas of popular culture which gave them ideas. Contemporary events New technological developments. Plastic had developed and improved. You could now get plastic in bright colours. You could get different types of plastic which could be solid and strong or flexible like a fabric. Plastic could be inject molded. This means it could be poured like a liquid in to a mold and then left to set hard. This made it possible to create almost any form. Space race. 1960’s. USA and Russia were competing to be the first nation to land a man on the moon. UFO’s, space rockets and aliens were very popular imagery. Lots of designers used a minimal, space age look for their designs. Social changes. The Beat generation – see personal.
