Okinawa- island 350 miles from Japan was invaded U. S. lost 12,000 men Okinawa- island 350 miles from Japan was invaded U.S. lost 12,000 men. Island would serve as a staging area for the invasion of Japan. Japanese would not surrender had to kill them all. Invasion of main land would cost millions of lives on both sides.

Truman felt it was his duty to use every weapon available to save American lives Allies threatened Japan with “utter destruction” wanted them to surrender
