The Human Knot Divide into groups and everyone reach across the circle (not next to you) and grab someone else’s hands. Make sure you are not holding both hands with the same person. Try to form a perfect circle by untangling. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFqmzsZiBYk
Who are we? Students Helping Honduras is a non-profit organization that thrives to end poverty in Honduras through education and youth Our organization was started by Shin Fujiyama in 2006 after he traveled on a service trip to Honduras and saw the increasing levels of poverty and violence within the country. Today, there are over 2,000 students involved in SHH and over 4,000 volunteers who have traveled to help build schools.
About Honduras Over 60% of the population lives under the poverty line (Income less than $2.50 a day), which prevents children from attending school and gaining an education. This can lead to gang participation, violence, drug wars, and the continuing cycle of poverty. Only 30% of children attend school after the primary level, most are forced to work.
What do we do? As a chapter at GMU, we hold multiple fundraisers to raise money to send to Honduras. This includes bake sales, thrift shops, raffles, sporting events, and anything else you can think of! As an organization, volunteers and workers in Honduras build schools in villages that lack access to education. We have a goal of building 1,000 schools across Honduras. Villa Soleada
What makes us different? Sustainability: Ensures that our organization does not fall through. Different forms of fundraising. Sweat Equity: Communities provide their time and labor towards the project. Helps project to succeed in the future. Jobs, not Handouts: Provide locals with job opportunities, we do not provide jobs because they are “poor.” This creates a culture of dependency. Local Empowerment: 100% of our on-the- ground staff members are Honduran.
Trip Costs 8-day trip, included meals, transportation in Honduras, and activities ($650) Airfare is separate ($300-$700) Prescriptions needed: Malaria and Typhoid Traveler’s Insurance ($20) We can help you fundraise for your own trip! Trips during Spring Break, Summer Break, and Winter Break!
