Facts Hawaii is one of the 50 states in the United States. It is the youngest of the states. It became a state on August 21, 1959. It is the only state made up entirely of islands. Climate Hawaii has a tropical climate In the summer, the temperature typically reaches the upper 80’s. In the winter, the temperature can be anywhere between 60-80 degrees. Most of Hawaii only has two seasons. The dry season is from May to October and the wet season lasts from October to April.

Aloha! Aloha is a Hawaiian greeting. When people meet, they can greet each other by saying aloha! Aloha also means goodbye. This word also means affection, love, peace, compassion, and mercy.

What to do in Hawaii Hawaii is best known for its beaches and water activities. Surfing is by far the most popular water sport in Hawaii, and scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities exist nearly everywhere. In addition, jet skiing, parasailing and kayaking are available in tourist areas.

Volcanoes The Hawaiian islands were created by volcanic eruptions that happened millions of years ago. There are currently 3 active volcanoes in Hawaii. At Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, visitors can come close to the most active volcano in the world. Kilauea is the name of the most active volcano. It has been continuously erupting since 1983.

Leis A lei is a series of objects strung together and worn (commonly around the neck). Leis in Hawaii are usually made out of flowers and are given as a gift when people arrive and leave. Leis symbolize affection, love, appreciation and friendship.

Pearl Harbor Located on the island of O’ahu and is the location for a United States Navy base. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese Navy began a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. This attack led to the United States involvement in World War II.

Whale Watching Maui is the location for Humpback Whale Watching from December 15 to April 15 each year as the massive Humpbacks migrate to Hawaii's warm waters.
