Stetson Hills 5th Grade Welcome to Virtual Curriculum Night Please make sure you click slide show from the tool bar and play “from beginning” or “from the start” to hear the audio.

Classroom Expectations Be respectful, responsible and trustworthy. Come to class ready to learn. Listen and follow directions. Always do your personal best!

Consequences A discussion will typically take place to help student get back on track. If poor behavior continues a notation will be made in the student’s agenda and a logical solution will be discussed between teacher and student. Students are encouraged to solve the problem on their own. However, should they need help finding a solution, teachers may suggest consequences which may include, but are not limited to, loss of privileges, loss of recess time, behavior reflection sheet, detention, buddy room referral or loss of reward. Serious disruptions may result in an office referral.

Rewards Punch Cards and Raffle Tickets Verbal Recognition PACE Tickets “Student of the Week” “Student of the Quarter”

Grading Standards Based Grading What does it all mean? Your child’s grades are a reflection of their ability to demonstrate competence in Arizona State Standards and College and Career Readiness Standards

Grading Our school will not be recording 0's for missing assignments.  A score of 49% will be recorded until the assignment received.  Assignments that ACTUALLY earned less than 50% are put into the grade book as a 50% until the assessment has been redone, if applicable.  Retakes may be offered at teacher discretion. If a student would like the opportunity to show mastery of material, he/she should meet with teacher to discuss this.

Science Inquiry learning Interactive We encourage critical thinking skills and discovery as we explore science. Some topics covered are: The Sun, The Moon and The Stars, The Human Body, Mixtures and Solutions and Levers and Pulleys.

Social Studies Topics covered: Geography, Early Native Americans, Exploration, Thirteen Colonies, The American Revolution, The U.S. Constitution, Westward Expansion and Civil War. Social Studies is taught using many different resources. We have curriculum from McGraw-Hill that uses an interactive component.

Reading Reading Streets – District-wide adopted curriculum Focus on Literary Elements, Strategies and Skills (comprehension skills and strategies, vocabulary, word analysis, terms, etc) Homework will consist of 2-3 nights per week (skill practice, close reads and any unfinished work.) Grading: Test (at the end of a story) is always open book and includes comprehension, vocabulary, word analysis and a written response. (Remind 101)

Writing We write across the curriculum Students will be doing a variety of writing: We work on basics throughout the year, and as the students become proficient, we work on higher writing skills and devices that create exciting pieces. We will be working on Personal Narratives, Informative/Explanatory Essays, Opinion papers, and Literary Analysis. Spelling will be addressed through conventions of writing and Words Their Way.

Math Eureka Math Learnzillion, Oakland or Eureka math videos (all on website) Mathematical Practices: We focus on eight specific math behaviors in the math process in order to master the standards. Briefly, these are perseverance in solving problems. Reasoning abstractly and with a focus on why rather than memorizing formulas, Find and/Choose the most efficient and correct strategies, Apply prior knowledge to solve problems in everyday life, Use appropriate tools strategically and accurately, Be precise, Look for patterns and decompose and compose quantities in different ways. Common Core Standards: -Operations and Algebraic Thinking -Numbers and Operations Base 10 -Measurement and Data -Geometry -Number and Operations Fractions

….Math Mini-Quizzes every 1-2 weeks. No retakes. Module Test every 6-8 weeks. Students may retake tests. Study guides are provided for all tests. All quizzes are open note. Homework (usually3-4 nights a week). Homework is reviewed in class the next day.

RTI/Homeroom If your child is in need of extra help or small group instruction, this happens during our RTI time. RTI is a 45 minute block devoted to addressing the individual needs of your child. Read 180/ Math 180 Students may be assigned a flex group for a specific skill. There is an also opportunity to go ask questions of a teacher about areas of concern. Students may have time to work on homework, visit the library, or read if they are not working in a small group.

Grade Level Website Parents and students can reach our 5th grade website and each individual’s page through the Stetson Hills Website. www.stetsonhills.dvusd.org
