ICT in maths We have a subscription to Sumdog. This is used to support the children’s mental maths skills. There are regular opps to practise on this website at school during the week and it can be accessed at home. We have also set up a subscription to a website called mymaths which practises written methods and other areas of maths such as fractions of numbers. Year 4 have been introduced to this and Year 3 will be trying this in Term 4.

Number Race Number Race was introduced to focus upon mental maths targets. It practised 2x per week in ILZ time and assessed each fortnight. The race is progressive and aims to improve quick calcualtions needed for speedy arithmetic methods. Key areas of focus in Y3/4 are: Mental addition e.g. 7 + 5 Multiplication facts e.g. 6 x 4 = Adding 2 digit numbers e.g. 15 + 12 =

Mastery and Reasoning The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils: • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, finding relationships and making rules using mathematical language • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing difficulty including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.’

Reading genres to cover: Fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction and reference books or textbooks. These should include: fairy stories, myths and legends, and retelling some of these orally. 1) Retrieve and record information 2) Explaining the meaning of words in context 3) Drawing inferences 4) Predicting what might happen from details stated and implied 5) Identifying main ideas 6) Identifying how language, structure, and presentation contribute to meaning 7) Discuss and give opinions about texts read as well as asking further questions

Guided Reading and Dear Time Guided Reading x 1 per week with the teacher 1-1 reading with reading assistant for a short period of time if identified as needed Dear Time x 3 per week for independent reading and reading activities

Questions to ask your child Focus on developing comprehension skills rather than just fluency will encourage children to develop opinions on books. This will develop the key skills of finding information, listening skills and promote language. Writing Each term, the children will study a narrative genre such as stories or description. In addition, they will study a non-fiction genre such as instructions, non-chronological reports, and persuasive letters. ***In Year 4, the children will also cover explanations, newspaper reports and play scripts. Children are encouraged to build their stamina for writing over longer periods. There is an increased emphasis on children being able to edit and improve their own writing. Word banks and writing frames are given to children if they need more support to structure their writing and develop their use of adventurous vocabulary. As the children move into Year 4, they are encouraged to use thesauruses to develop their vocabulary further.
