What are some ways we can start a story that hooks the reader? Begin with a quote that might lead to understanding the story, the conflict, or the outcome. Start in the middle of the action – drop your reader in! Open at a distance and close in. Start with a minor mystery. Keep talk to a minimum. Revisit the beginning once you reach the end.
Think of your plot PLOT as a story in 5 frames
Writing Practice: There is a bumping sound from the basement. Genre: Horror First sentence: must be a line from a song. Who is the narrator? First or Third? Setting: where is the story set? Urban, woods, Australia, US?
Creating Tension The trick is to build up the tension and anxiety before the protagonist actually investigates. You need to imagine worrying thoughts, calm themselves, imagine more worrying thoughts, reason with themselves, do something to distract themselves and then finally investigate.
