START R – Right Verb explains, describes, gives details, tells a story, expresses an idea, persuades, entertains, compares What is the author DOING? Prompt response Body of TDA: Paragraph two – Use your graphic organizer to guide the construction of this detail paragraph. Example: The sinking of the RMS Titanic was a very historic and significant event. As the text states, “In 1912, the Titanic had set sail on her maiden voyage, the largest, most luxurious ship the world had ever seen.” The authors make this statement to how important the ship was, and why it was a historic trip. The reader can imply that because of the size of the ship, if the Titanic had not sunk, the journey would have been a great success.

Prompt response Body of TDA: Paragraph three – Use your graphic organizer to guide the construction of this detail paragraph. Example: Understanding the wreckage of the Titanic really brings the fatal journey to life. When the authors discussed the different parts of the ship, the reader was able to visualize what it would have been like to be on the Titanic when it was sailing. Page 210 took the reader on a “walk” through the Titanic, and because of that it was easier to think about what it would have been like to be on the ship.

Prompt response Body of TDA: Paragraph four – Use your graphic organizer to guide the construction of this detail paragraph. Example: The remains of the Titanic can teach a lot about history. On page 210, the authors of “Titanic” explain about several artifacts that look like they had just been used. This evidence from the text connects the reader with the past. The artifacts from the Titanic wreck shows what clothes were worn, items that were used, and machinery from the ship.

Prompt response Closing – Wrap it up! Summarize or re-state your most important points from your START paragraph. Also incorporate an idea from the prompt. Example: Learning about the wreckage of the Titanic’s first voyage is important because you can learn lessons about history. If the Titanic hadn’t sunk when it hit an iceberg, we may still be building ships the same way! “Titanic” explained how the wreckage of the ship ties in to today and taught about the significance of learning about it all.
