E-mail mystery

Do Now 9/7 Just discuss quietly with your seat partner: Dress Code – what are the requirements? Do you know them? Ask a question to each other about classroom procedures. Is there anything you are still wondering about?

Do Now 9/8 Discuss with your seat partner What will your score be on a 20 point assignment that is turned in late? Where do you turn in work that Mrs. Kimble did not collect? Which of the rules do you think is most important and why? What materials should you have on Monday?

Do Now 9/11 What were your strengths as a group during the discussion on Friday? What improvements could you make in your groups to engage in a more effective discussion? ( Use the pink paper to help)

Nature of Science Scientific investigations use a variety of methods Scientific knowledge is based on evidence Scientific knowledge is open to revision in light of new evidence Scientific models, laws, mechanisms and theories explain natural phenomena Science is a way of knowing Scientific knowledge assumes an order and consistency in natural systems Science is a human endeavor Science addresses questions about the natural and material world

Directions Green ( will be a spokesperson later),Yellow, Red are readers- Blue is the recorder. EVERYONE SHARES IDEAS. Randomly choose three e- mails from the envelope Write down evidence from each e-mail. Construct a story based on your evidence about the people in the e-mail. ( What is going on with them and why). Make sure your explanation is based on evidence. Repeat with three more e-mails. Revise your story based on new evidence.

Sharing Out GREEN will be the spokesperson on the group. Share your story to the class, not to the teacher. Let’s see how similar our stories were based on the evidence we choose. List your e-mail #’s and your constructed story.

Answer these questions as a group on the back of your paper Answer these questions as a group on the back of your paper. ( B is recorder) 1. Did you have the exact same evidence as other groups? 2. Does this fact change the way you “ do science?” EXPLAIN 3. Was any new evidence presented that supported or refuted your explanation? Explain.

Science Practices Asked questions and defined the problem 2. Analyzed and interpreted data 3. Constructed and explanation 4. Engaged in argument from evidence 5. Obtained, evaluated and communicated information.

Do Now 9/12 Last week we worked together to solve the cube and the e-mail mystery. Please refer to those activities while answering the following question. In what ways were you thinking like a scientist during either of the activities from last week? Explain by using specifics.

Observations from your discussion: I think Maybe So what happened is… Based on ….. I am guessing …. I am confused …… so … I vote for…. So…. Wait…. Right… It must be …. I think…. What do you think? Hmmm, hmmm … Oh .. So.. Okay..so.. But Listen… That would make sense… I think… Oh..I think.. That doesn’t explain.. Well maybe, but…

LT: To interact with text and use a note taking strategy to discuss a current event article Read the article that Mrs. Kimble gave you Interact with the text by : Making notes in the margins Underlining key phrases Putting question marks by parts that are puzzling or you want to question later Circling words that hinder your understanding of the article

Reading and Notetaking After you have read through the text, use one of the note taking strategies to take notes on the article in your journal. Sample Journal Entry Reading and Notetaking LT: To interact with text and use a note taking strategy to discuss a current event article Notes on Orca article ----------- --------------- ( Your own notes go here)
