PRINTER AND ITS TYPES

CONTENTS DEFINITION OF PRINTER MAJOR TYPES ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES MODERN PRINTERS REFERENCE

INTRODUCTION WHAT IS PRINTER A printer is an output device that produces text and graphics on paper.

Major types Printers can be divided into two main groups impact printer and non-impact printer Impact printer produces text and images when tiny wire pins on print head strike the ink ribbon by physically contacting the paper. Non-impact printer produces text and graphics on paper without actually striking the paper.

Impact printer

NON-IMPACT PRINTERS

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES Ink Jet Printing Advantages Mechanically simple Large gamut of specialty colors Very good initial print quality Non-contact printing for special applications

CONTINUING Disadvantages Cost of consumables Limited print speeds Average reliability Poor image stability Lamination needed for durability Quality decreases over long runs

Impact vs. Non-impact Impact - These printers have a mechanism that touches the paper in order to create an image. There are two main impact technologies: Dot matrix printers use a series of small pins to strike a ribbon coated with ink, causing the ink to transfer to the paper at the point of impact. Character printers are basically computerized typewriters. They have a ball or series of bars with actual characters (letters and numbers) embossed on the surface.

CONTINUING Non-impact - These printers do not touch the paper when creating an image. Inkjet printers are part of this group, which includes: Inkjet printers Laser printers

LATEST TECHNOLOGIES Technology which uses fullCure photopolymer materials in 28µ layers being deposited by the Jetting head sliding back and forth along the X-axis. Ultravoilet rays are then used to cure and harden the prototype which requires no further curing and can be used readily as a fully functional prototype
