Union Advantages Most fighting didn’t occur in North, so area stayed intact. Economy was better prepared for war. Strong central government Strong military tactics.
Confederate Advantages Only had to fight a defensive war. Able to fight on “home turf” More experienced military leaders than the North More adapted to living off the land
Confederate Advantages Many Confederate sympathizers in the border states. Fought for homes and their cause Border States: Union states that allow slavery. Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland and West Virginia.
Union Disadvantages Had to fight an offensive war Had to work hard to keep the loyalty of the border states. Fought on very unfamiliar land. Many urbanites were not familiar with weapons, and living off the land. Goal: They had to take over the South.
Confederate Disadvantages Population of only 9 million (3.5 million were slaves). Only 18,000 factories to produce war materials 9,000 miles of railroad Union blockade made it difficult to trade overseas.
