HEAT RECOVERY VENTILATION MAKING MONEY WITH SMALL COMMERCIAL RETROFITS RE-ENGINEERED MAKING MONEY WITH SMALL COMMERCIAL RETROFITS AHR 2017 Las Vegas, Nevada

EXISTING RTUs – THEY’RE EVERYWHERE! AGING INSTALLATIONS Many aging gas packs Possible curb reuse Typical energy savings w/replacement 5% © Ventacity Systems, Inc.

REPLACING PACKAGED ROOFTOP UNITS WITH HRV + VRF! Remove aging RTUs Replace some with VS1000 RTs Repurpose ducts, possibly Install DMS/VRF for heating/cooling THE PARADIGM SHIFT © Ventacity Systems, Inc.

COMPARISON OF RTU REPLACEMENT VS HRV/HP UPGRADE Energy Maintenance Life Span Equipment sizing Comfort IAQ Attractive Payback! Very Low Energy Savings (5% Typical) Same High Cost Maintenance 15 Year Life Span Same H/C Loads, Resulting in 1:1 Replacement Same Noise Level Same poor IAQ Significant Energy Savings(Proven 40-60+ %) 50% + Reduction In Maintenance Costs 25-30 Year Life Span Significant Reduction in H/C Loads, Reduced Equipment Sizing Improved Comfort & Quiet Great IAQ & Health © Ventacity Systems, Inc.

VENTACITY VS1000 RT + VRF PILOT PROJECT #1 9 Rooftop packaged units; 47 tons of cooling Replaced with 4 VS1000 RTs and a 16-ton Mitsubishi VRF System Recent observation: 101 oF on roof, system maintained set point (71F) VRF AT ~75 % capacity 47  13 KBTU/SQFT projected EUI Tenant/owner HAPPY! © Ventacity Systems, Inc.

ENERGY Consulting Firm installation FACTS Privately owned office Five story building circa 1909 17,162 sq. ft. conditioned area Pre-conversion HVAC—One 35 Ton RTU serving all floors Post-conversion HVAC—One VS1000 RT, one Mitsubishi Citi- Multi 14 ton VRF, zone by zone ¾ ton to 2-ton heads All-new ducting was installed with a common plenum CO2 sensor providing direct feedback to the VS1000 RT for demand-controlled ventilation. A Mitsubishi City-Multi 14 Ton VRF outdoor unit with zone by zone ¾-ton to 2-ton heads, was installed to satisfy the heating and cooling load.  kBTU/ft2/year 64% lower © Ventacity Systems, Inc.

Electric co-op installation FACTS Electric cooperative offices Single story building built in 1938 5,681 sq. ft. conditioned area Pre-conversion HVAC—2-stage 273 kBtu/hr electric boilers serving fan coils & radiators; packaged HP RTU; 2 swamp coolers for storage/garage area Post-conversion HVAC—One VS1000 RT working with two Mitsibishi multi zone DHP, four DMS, two 24,000 BTU AHU, and one electric boiler back-up Early monitoring results shown below show a noticeable “step down” in CO2 concentrations immediately. During the first two weeks, CO2 was almost always between 400ppm and 600ppm, with one peak of 810ppm. Pre-conversion, there were regular spikes in all areas well above 1000ppm. © Ventacity Systems, Inc.

Law office installation FACTS Privately owned law office Two story building built in 1909 12,000 sq. ft. conditioned area Pre-conversion HVAC—9 RTU’s Post-conversion HVAC—Four VS1000 RT, One Mitsubishi VRF heat pump, eight Mitsubishi Ducted AHU kBTU/ft2/year 71% lower By upgrading lights, windows, and air-tightness, the office’s overall EUI is expected to drop by over half, from 61.4 to 28 kBtu/ft2/year. HVAC EUI, in particular, is expected to drop from 47 to 13.5 kBtu/ft2/year, a 71% reduction. © Ventacity Systems, Inc.

Law office’s savings skyrocket The first quarter of monitored energy usage indicates the Ventacity system outperformed predictions, even when summer average temps were above norms. © Ventacity Systems, Inc.
