STUDENT 2017 2018 ORIENTATION

Dear Parents and Students,   We would officially like to welcome all new Eaglets to our family.  We have been working hard all summer to improve our facilities, curriculum and staff.     “Disce Quasi Semper Victurus” “Study like you will live forever”

ISCHS has been an "A" school for ten years in a row Recognitions International Studies Charter Middle School (ISCMS) has achieved a remarkable goal by ranking #6 in middle schools in Miami-Dade county and 13th in the state of Florida. ISCMS has been an “A” school for six years in a row. ISCHS has been an "A" school for ten years in a row International Studies Charter High School (ISCHS) has achieved a remarkable goal by ranking #3 in Miami Dade county and #5 in the state of Florida.  

Recognitions The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program is a United States government program created to honor schools which have achieved high levels of performance or made significant improvements in closing the achievement gap in schools where at least 40% of the student population is classified as disadvantaged.  Our middle school is nominated for the Blue Ribbon Award.  We anticipate knowing the results of the nomination by September, 2017.  Our High School won the Blue Ribbon Award in 2015. International Studies Charter High School ranks as a gold medal winner. We are #3 in Florida and #23 in the nation out of 22, 000 public high schools in the entire country.  According to U.S. News and World Reports, International Studies Charter High School was ranked the #9 Charter School in the nation.  We are ranked #3 in the state of Florida and we are ranked the #24 high school overall in the entire nation for the last five years.

Opening of School: Pick Up/Drop off Procedures Students MUST be dropped off and picked up on the intersection of 9th Street and 25th Avenue(for safety reasons) This may be accessed from either 27th Avenue or 24th Avenue Security will be located at this location to ensure safety and facilitate timeliness  Please DO NOT drop off students on 8th street. This is a safety hazard.   Parents are not allowed to park to drop off or pick up.  ISCHS does not provide transportation; however, we have flyers for available bus companies (located in the main office). You may also check MDCPS’ website for an approved bus list(www.dadeschools.net)

Detentions Discipline Policy Must be served within two school days Parents must sign detention slip Detentions will be served in room 104A: Middle School 8:00am- 8:30am High School 2:35pm- 3:05pm Detentions are given for uniform violations, behavioral issues as well as excessive tardies and/or absences. 

Code of Student Conduct/ Cell Phone Policy Discipline Policy Code of Student Conduct/ Cell Phone Policy http://ehandbooks.dadeschools.net/policies/90/CSC_sec_14-15.pdf Electronic devices will not be given back to students during the school day under any circumstance. To reclaim a device the student’s parent or guardian must come to the main office  to pick up If a student needs to use the phone, they may use the phone in the main office. Parents are not to contact students during school time on their cell phones Students will NOT be allowed cell phone use while in school, including during lunch or in between classes.  Please reference page 33 of MDCPS Code of Student Conduct for full cell phone policy. 

Social Networking Discipline Policy Social networking is including but not limited to: Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Social networking of any kind is not permitted during school hours Students are not to use social media to send obscene or inappropriate materials or record teachers, staff or fellow students.  Students are not to participate in ANY type of cyber bullying  Parents are responsible for monitoring and regulating student’s use of electronic devices Full examples of improper uses of technology that are violations of the Code of Student Conduct can be found on page 34 of the Secondary Code of Student Conduct book. (MDCPS)   Violation of any of these policies will result in possible suspension or expulsion from International Studies Charter School.

Uniforms Middle and High School Uniforms: Navy Blue Polo with School Logo Striped Rugby Navy Blue and White Shirt (All shirts must be tucked in) Khaki Dickie Pants with School Logo Navy Sweater with School Logo Black or Brown Belt Black, Brown, or White shoes  Spirit Shirts may be worn on FRIDAYS ONLY!!! This does NOT include PE Shirts/Field day. Lunch/Breakfast A catered meal will be available each day for students to purchase. Parents may pre-pay (cash or check) the meals on either a daily, weekly, monthly, or annual basis.   Our cafeteria manager, Maria de Armas, will be available from 7:00 AM – 10:00 AM. Students may also bring their own food or make purchases from the vending machines.   Our menus will be available on our website a month in advance.  Meal Reduced Full price Breakfast $0.30 $2.00 Lunch $0.40 $3.50

Parent Volunteer Hours Volunteer Hours: Research has shown that Parental/Guardian involvement is a critical component of a child’s educational success.   International Studies Charter Middle/High School prides itself on the success of our students. The school encourages that all parents/guardians become active stakeholders in their child’s educational success by completing 20 hours of service to the school prior to the last day of school.   Donations: Although donations cannot be made in lieu of volunteer hours, donations of any kind are always welcome and encouraged. Donations from parents, guardians, businesses, and community members support the school’s efforts to implement activities, programs, tutoring and incentives that directly benefit our students.  All hours must be completed prior to the end of May (except for 8th and 12th grade students For more information about volunteer opportunities, please see the school’s website or contact the PTSA

Before/After School Care Program Students are not permitted to be on campus 30 minutes prior to the start of school or 30 minutes after dismissal unless participating in an extracurricular activity or the before or after school care program.  In order for students to remain on campus after school, they need to be enrolled in an after school activity or sport or be enrolled in the after school care program.

PTSA International Studies Charter School supports the mission of our local Parent Teacher Association of being a powerful voice for all children, a resource for families and communities, and an advocacy agency for education and well-being of every child. All parents are encouraged to join the PTSA.  The annual membership fee is $25.00 per family.  All money collected is used for student activities as well as classroom needs.
