But where, oh where, did Cindy’s story begin? The earliest dated version of the Cinderella story appears in a Chinese book written between A.D. 850 and 860. This ninth century tale was recorded by Taun Ch-eng-shih, one of history’s earliest folktale collectors. He wrote that he had first heard of the story from a servant who had been with his family for years. No more is known about the tale’s origins (Panati, 1987, p. 173). Yeh-shen is mistreated by an ill-tempered stepmother Magical fish Golden slipper & Chinese festival Avalanche of stones punishes wicked stepmother/sisters

Literary Aspects of Cinderella I. Cinderella as FOLKTALE: What is a folktale? - a story created by the “folk” (the common people) - oral tradition passed down from one generation to the next - examples: legends, fables, tall tales, ghost tales, and fairy tales - secular (non-religious) - feature magic, transformations, & enchantments - folktale heroes are ordinary people - entertainment value and social/moral lessons * address our deepest needs * explain truths about life * engage our sense of wonder Hmong Cinderella

Literary Aspects of Cinderella II. Cinderella as FAIRY TALE: What is a fairy tale? - a type of folktale - supernatural elements (spirits, talking animals, magic) - good-hearted people who triumph over evil - moral lesson, or a message about how we should behave III. Cinderella and MOTIF: What is motif? - a word, character, object, image, metaphor or idea that recurs in a work or several works - bear important relationships to the theme of the work Vietnamese Cinderella

Developing Good Questions: Example 1 Why are these supernatural elements important? What elements of magic are present in various Cinderella stories? What purpose(s) do these supernatural elements serve? Supernatural Elements How does the choice of supernatural element affect the text’s meaning (symbolism)? Can we make any cultural inferences based on the supernatural elements in the story?

LESSONS Developing Good Questions: Example 2 How do these tales differ from one culture to the next? What lessons about how we should behave exist in these tales? What cultural inferences do these differences lead us to make? LESSONS What do these lessons tell us about the power relationships in the tales and their context? Which lessons are most salient (and why)? What do these lessons tell us about the intended audience? Are these lessons specifically addressing race, gender, or social class? If so, what do they tell us?

Team Activity D B A In your teams, first, generate a list of thoughtful questions about your assigned text. Look at the pictures Use prior knowledge about the culture Second, make predictions based on these questions about your assigned text.
