Answer During the Agricultural Revolution, humans learned to plant seeds, take care of crops, and to harvest food from them. They learned to domesticate (or tame) animals, so they could get foods like milk or meat from them, use their skins or wool, and make the animals do farm work like dragging a stick for preparing the soil for planting seeds. Doing agriculture gave humans a reason to stay in one place (rather than be nomads), so they formed villages and could develop other skills and jobs.

answer In the beginning, everyone had to be a farmer to help grow enough food ( whether it was crops or domesticated animals) for everyone to survive. If there was enough food to go around, maybe people could have different jobs to help the community! What jobs could those be?

Did everyone have to be a farmer? Communities first started with farmers coming together. But what if they produced a lot of food? What if there was more than was needed – a SURPLUS? How might village life change? Discuss with your group!

Today’s learning goal TSWBAT explain what a SURPLUS is, how it helped develop SPECIALIZED SKILLS, and the ROLES village people could have in their communities.

summary A SURPLUS occurred when farmers produced more of something than they needed to survive. A surplus could include grain, other foods, extra wool from sheep, extra materials for making cloth, and extra livestock (animals). Surpluses in good seasons helped villages survive during bad seasons.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS When farmers began producing surpluses, not everyone had to raise food anymore. People began to SPECIALIZE, or develop special skills, in one kind of work. People specialized in being potters, weavers, holy people, artisans, or government members.

Why did social classes develop? Social classes developed because people with similar skills, backgrounds, customs, and income got grouped together as “classes”.

WHY DID GOVERNMENT DEVELOP? Government developed because laws and leadership were needed to keep order and settle disagreements. Early humans made laws to keep their communities safer and better to live in.
