Extended Essay and ToK ToK - fosters critical thinking. Trying to answer the question ”How do we know what we know” Sense perception, Language, Emotion, Memory Reason, Faith, Intuition, Imagination Extended Essay. 4000 word ”essay” on subject of student’s choice. Process begins in May of IB2. See matrix - next slide for extra points. The theory of knowledge course is one of the distinguishing features of the diploma programme. A subject is not to be found in the national secondary curriculums of most countries. It aims to develop and foster critical thinking, to give students a critical way of relating to knowledge and the construction of knowledge. It basically attempts to answer the question: HOW do we know what WHAT we know. So we consider the different ways of knowing that we use in the construction of knowledge in different Knowledge Areas: like the Human Sciences, Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, History, Ethics, Religious Knowledge Systems and Indigenous Knowledge Systems. A largely discussion-based subject which is assessed through a TOK Presentation in which a student examines knowledge questions derived from Real Life Situations, and through a 1600 word essay based on one of six essay titles.
Together the performances in the extended essay and theory of knowledge can contribute bonus points to students’ individual diploma scores, and this is how the matrix works out.
