CLAFLIN UNIVERSITY AT A GLANCE Founded in 1869 Located in Orangeburg, SC Affiliated with the United Methodist Church FTE: 2000 students Four schools: School of Business, School of Education, School of Humanities & Social Sciences, and School of Natural Sciences & Mathematics 36 undergraduate majors, 24 undergraduate minors, and three graduate degrees: MBA, Masters in Biotechnology, and Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction (Online)

H.V. Manning Library Mission Statement The mission of the H.V. Manning Library at Claflin University is to support and supplement the teaching- learning program of the institution at all levels.

The Freshman College Is a first-year experience program that includes a variety of selected activities specifically designed for students transitioning from high school to Claflin University. It is a mixture of mandatory courses, assemblies and lyceum events and dynamic mentoring sessions. TFC is designed to serve the University’s overarching mission to develop visionary leaders of strong moral fiber through a curriculum that is academically rigorous and emphasizes social and cultural development, as well as personal and civic responsibility.

Panther STEPS (Quality Enhancement Plan) Acronym stand for: Students in Transition Engaged and Preparing for Success Will create a learning community wherein a placement assessment will be used to gauge the fundamental skills of first-time freshmen and determine their individual educational plan. Will assist students in developing solid, grounded learning habits which will, in turn, allow students to become life-long learners. Mrs. Drayton and Ms. Montgomery participate in the goals of the program by serving as co-instructors.

UNIV 101 and UNIV 102 UNIV 101: Freshman Year Experience I and UNIV 102: Freshman Year Experience II Both courses are three semester credit hours each. Freshmen Year Experience I provide the first-year Claflin University student with a general background of knowledge about the University. Freshmen Year Experience II is a continuation of UNIV 101. In addition, this course introduces freshmen to various learning styles, career planning, health-related issues, and personal and social development.

Information Literacy The H.V. Manning Library and The Freshmen College have partnered together to ensure during the fall semester all UNIV 101 classes visit the H.V. Manning Library to receive an information literacy class tailored specifically to the students major. This semester there are 20 sections. During the information literacy class students are shown how to utilize the library website, subject specific databases and test prep/career planning databases such as: EBSCOhost’s e-book collection, Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center, and LearningExpress Library The Career/TestPrep book collection is located behind the Reference Desk.

PASCAL Delivers PASCAL Delivers is a rapid book-delivery service provided by the Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries which enables students, faculty and staff across the state to request and receive books from academic libraries in South Carolina. Over 12 million items are available in the catalog and books usually arrive within a few days! Courier makes deliveries Monday-Friday Patrons can borrow books for up to six weeks at a time.

Claflin University Receives $100,000 from UNCF’s Career Pathways Initiative Planning Grant

Takeaways Upper classmen are utilizing the PASCAL Delivers services to request test prep materials. Incoming students are voicing a greater concern about planning for their future. The Office of Career Services has been made aware of the test prep/career service resources the H.V. Manning Library has. Helps the Library assess its existing test prep/career collection.
