Genesis 36 – the genealogy of Esau

Genesis 36 – the genealogy of Esau

Genesis 36 – The Genealogy of Esau

Genesis 36 – The Genealogy of Esau Why so much interest in Esau’s genealogy? To show that God keeps His promises Genesis 17 verses 1-6 (God mad promises about Ishmael too and kept those – Ishmael was included in the covenant of circumcision) Genesis 21 verse 12 Genesis verses 23 and 24 Genesis 25 verse 23 Genesis 26 verses 2 and 3 Genesis 27 verses 39 – 40

Genesis 36 – The Genealogy of Esau Why so much interest in Esau’s genealogy? To make the point that prospered does not mean saved To inform the Israelites in preparation for entering the Promised Land Deuteronomy 2 verses 2 – 6 Deuteronomy 23 verse 7 Numbers 20 and 21 They needed to know who the Edomites were Obadiah 1 verse 10 – similar judgement on Edom for harming Israel Arguably it is still the same today – Edom and Ishmael raise arms against Israel but not the other way around

Genesis 36 – The Genealogy of Esau Why so much interest in Esau’s genealogy? To verify God’s word as being true The tribes referred to are real tribes The towns referred to existed and often still exist They are sometimes referred to later in the bible, as you would expect from a true historical account Saul a Benjamite (from Jacob’s line) Job from the land of Uz (Verse 28) Eliphaz the Temanite (Teman was a son of the original Eliphaz) Amalek as a nation, destroyed in the time of Saul and David (1 Samuel 15 v 3)

Genesis 36 – The Genealogy of Esau Why so much interest in Esau’s genealogy? Some of the names confirm that nations other than Israel can turn to God or be God aware Ruel – Friend of God Eliphaz – God is fine Gold Jeush – The Lord Helps
