When to Floss: Floss at least once a day. Floss immediately after eating sugary foods. Flossing Home

Fluoride: Fluoride- a mineral that is added to water to protect teeth from decay. Use a toothpaste with fluoride in it so that you can take good care of your teeth everyday.

Plaque: Plaque- a sticky material that forms on and between teeth. It causes tooth decay, which can cause a cavity to form. Brushing, flossing, and fluoride are the only ways of removing plaque.

Cavities: A cavity is a hole in the enamel of a tooth. It is usually caused by teeth not being clean, which causes plaque to form. Once a cavity is formed, nothing can remove it. Therefore, it must be filled. Brushing, flossing, and fluoride can prevent cavities.

Food: What are beneficial foods to eat? What foods are not healthful for your teeth? What vitamins build up teeth?

Beneficial Foods for Teeth: Foods from the “milk, yogurt, and cheese” food group keep teeth and gums healthy. Examples are: low-fat cheese, yogurt, or cottage cheese. Food Home

Foods that can be harmful for teeth: Avoid snacks with lots of sugar in them. This produces plaque. Eat healthful foods such as veggies, fruits, or whole grain crackers. Do not eat sticky foods such as caramel or marshmallows. This can pull out fillings if a cavity has been treated. Food Home

Vitamin C Builds Strong Teeth: Foods with Vitamin C are very beneficial for teeth. Vitamin C helps repair wounds and grow strong tissue in your mouth. Examples of such foods are oranges, lemons, or tomatoes. Food Home

Protection: Wear a mouth guard when playing sports. This can protect teeth from being chipped or knocked out. Take everyday precautions (such as wearing a seatbelt, in case of a car accident).

Dental Checklist: Floss teeth at least once a day. Brush teeth at least twice a day. Brush and floss after eating sugary foods. Avoid eating sticky or sugary foods.
