Can you remember what an acid and an indicator are? Acids and Alkalis Developing: Students can set up an experiment safely Secure: Students can carry out and record results from an experiment Exceeding: Students can write a method for an experiment Entrance Activity Can you remember what an acid and an indicator are? Key Words – Tool Box Phenolphthalein Sodium hydroxide Indicator Acid Alkali

Task 2- Phenolphthalein & Sodium Hydroxide Learning Activity Task 2- Phenolphthalein & Sodium Hydroxide

Indicator Key Word Alert! Definition An indicator is a substance that changes colour when it comes in contact with an acid or alkali. Phenolphthalein is an example of an acid-alkali indicator which is colourless in an acid.

Safety First! Learning Activity

Instructions Learning Activity Instructions: 1. Place 8cm³ of sodium hydroxide solution into a test tube 2. Carefully add 3 drops of phenolphthalein solution 3. Record the colour of your observation

Learning Activity Why did this happen?

Method! Learning Activity Write a method that is a page long about your experiment. Answer the questions below and include diagrams where possible. Name three acids or alkalis in your home Write down the method for how you would carry out an experiment to see if the objects are acid or alkali using phenolphthalein indicator. Draw a diagram of your entire experiment. Then copy and complete the table below when doing your method Step in the method Why I am doing it Step 1: I will get a tube of toothpaste and I will measure out exactly 5 grams using a weighing scale By measuring exactly how much toothpaste I use I can make my results more reliable. Using a weighing scale is the most accurate way of measuring the mass of toothpaste
