School Council presentation to the Governors Thursday 17th July 2014

Introduction Hello! We are the School Councillors of St Francis School. Isla and Leila from Y2 Eloise and Liberty from Y3 Matthew and Daniel from Y4 Charlie and Ben from Y5 and Joseph and James from Y6

We, as School Councillors, are elected simply by class votes We, as School Councillors, are elected simply by class votes. Children interested in becoming a School Councillor make a speech then the other children in the class vote for their favourite candidate. This PowerPoint will show you what we have been doing over the last year. Enjoy!

Test Valley in Bloom Awards Longstock Hooray! Test Valley in Bloom Awards Longstock Hooray!

Last October an invitation was received from Councillor Dowden inviting St Francis to send two School Councillors to the Test Valley in Bloom Awards ceremony. James and I attended the ceremony along with Mrs Bray and Mrs Light. This took place at Longstock Village Hall. We were very proud to have been asked to represent St Francis school and had a lovely evening, especially enjoying the snack. We had our photograph taken with Councillor Dowden and the Mayor.

Bulb Planting

Together with children from Knightwood School, we were invited by Councillor Dowden to plant bulbs in Knightwood Road as part of the Valley Park Parish Council’s winter planting scheme. Our Gardening Club members also came and we all had fun planting daffodils.

Links With Knightwood Over the year we have been meeting with Knightwood School near us. In December we arranged with Brendoncare for some of us from both schools to go there to serve tea and biscuits to the residents. Some children also played songs on their musical instruments. James played his guitar and I played my flute.

Christmas Fayre As usual, the School Council ran the Candy Cane stall. The children pick a candy cane and if they win they get a pencil or rubber as their prize as well as keeping the candy cane. We really enjoyed it and we raised £100.

Deputy Head Interviews

As School Councillors we decided on the questions we wanted to ask to find out the best person to be our new Deputy Head, as we wanted he or she to fit into our School.

Tree planting We thought we would like to brighten up the main entrance to the school so the School Council bought two pots and planted Little Red Robin trees in them, together with trailing begonias. The entrance now looks welcoming and more colourful.

Easter Cakes

On Monday 31st of March the school councillors took over the church kitchen to make 420 Easter cakes(a cake for each child). It was really hard work but we really enjoyed it. The next day we sold the cakes and everyone enjoyed them(including the staff!!). Perhaps Mr McIlroy didn’t appreciate all the crumbs on the floor! In total, we raised £110 for Jack’s Journey, a local charity supporting a child with terminal illness.

Valley Park In Bloom

The launch of Valley Park in Bloom took place in June The launch of Valley Park in Bloom took place in June. Councillor Dowden greeted us and we joined members of Knightwood School to mark the launch by being photographed with plants. We were given plants to take back to school and the Gardening Club members planted them in large pots. They were placed along the path leading to the playground and they are growing beautifully!

Summer Fayre

In spite of the forecast the sun shone on the summer fayre In spite of the forecast the sun shone on the summer fayre. Everybody had a great time as soon as the summer fayre started. Lots of people came to our fantastic lollipop stall. Every child got a lolly and if they won, they got a pencil or a rubber as an extra prize. At the end we counted up the money and we raised £100!! 20

School Council Picnic Last Friday we had a great time at our School Council picnic. We all brought a plate of food to share and afterwards played Pass the Parcel and other games. It was great fun!

INTERCULTURAL WEEK

This week we have been learning all about China This week we have been learning all about China. We have had an opportunity to listen to a Chinese story teller at assembly time. KS2 made Origami shapes and KS1made kites and learnt a Chinese dance. Everyone took part in food tasting and it was fun and delicious.
