George Dixon primary School Council presentation for Governing Body December 2015 – July 2016

The role of a school councillor To be a good role model. To model exemplary behaviour. To use their pupil voice in a proactive manner To be involved with the running of the school. To attend meetings and interact with stakeholders.

How have the School Council improved attendance and punctuality By designing logos for the whole school. By giving out letters to all parents and carers. By promoting the importance of attendance and punctuality By drafting information for the website. By assisting with new systems for example at the beginning and end of day when pupils are late.

What strategies have we used to improve road safety? By raising an awareness to parents and carers during an assembly. By giving out logos to the whole school. By designing information on the school website. By working with the Parent Network group By looking at Modeshift Stars and looking at creating a travel plan for our school. By working with the Parent Network group in designing a questionnaire for parents.

How have we enhanced teaching and learning By running lunchtime clubs for example Maths. By running nurturing and friendship groups to enhance the social skills of our pupils. By having Peer Mentors delivering lunchtime clubs. By looking at ways of utilising the school library with pupils and parents.

How have we improved behaviour By having accredited Triple ‘P’ Parenting classes delivered on site here at the school. By enhancing the school’s behaviour policy. By introducing a traffic light system. By holding detentions. By working closely with Parents, Learning Mentors Teachers and Family Support Worker. By conducting behaviour walks every Friday. By rewarding pupils every Friday who have displayed exemplary behaviour all week. By rewarding with other certificates.

How have the peer mentoring and lunchtime clubs improvEd our school behaviour The classes have helped and raised the classes of some of our younger pupils. The Peer Mentors are a positive role model and encourage other pupils to get along with each other. The clubs help with Teaching and Learning. The clubs give our pupils life skills to be able to work well with one another.

School council involvement at the parent/carer assembly School Councillors spoke about Road Safety They were present when we gave out certificates to the parents and carers who completed courses at the school. The importance of attendance and punctuality was emphasised by our school councillors. School Councillors joined the Parents and Carers for Tea, Coffee and biscuits.

British values Our School take British Values and diversity very seriously. In line with DFE requirements and Ofsted’s wider agenda, our Family Support Worker works with parents and carers to prepare our pupils for life in modern Britain. We are a multi-faith school, and we teach our pupils and parents to embrace all faiths and non. Diversity awareness sessions have been conducted with some of our parents within the employability workshops, and we will be planning more work across all key stages to enhance on the above.

Charity work and Summer FAyre The School Council have worked hard on preparing letters for Parents and Carers on Sports Relief Day. The school raised over £300.00 In total. This year it was also our first Summer Fayre, the school worked collectively in this area, and the Parent Network group held some stalls along with other members of staff at the school. This was in line with the School Council’s aim to work closely with the Parent Network Group and promote further involvement of our Parents and Carers in the life of the school. We raised over £1000.

School council end of year parent/carer/pupil celebration School Councillors will be designing invitations to invite their parents/carers to celebrate success the last week of term. It is important for parents and carers to be involved in the life of the school and see all the hard work that their child/ren have been doing.

Next steps for the school council Selected School Councillors from Key Stage 2 will be involved with SLT and Mrs Kanani and will be on the interview panel to interview the volunteer Parent Mentors. A Playground buddy scheme is going to be piloted to prevent bullying and isolation. Buddies will be trained by Mrs Kanani and a member of the Mentoring team. The purpose of these schemes are to make our school even better, involve parents and carers in the life of the school, and to prevent bullying.
