Title: /ˈtʌɪt(ə)l/ the name of a book, picture and so on Location /lə(ʊ)ˈkeɪʃ(ə)n/: a particular place or position

Do you remember what does scale mean? We’ve talked about this word in the Lesson 1: at the airport.

If the distance on a map is 4.5 cm, then what Scale indicator: The scale of a map allows a reader to calculate the size, height and dimensions of the features shown on the map, as well as distances between different points. The scale on a map is the ratio between real life sizes. This is a scale of a map. If the distance on a map is 4.5 cm, then what does it represent in the real life? Three types of scale: Bar scale Verbal scale Representative fraction Verbal scale (word statement) expresses in words a relationship between a map distance and a ground distance. Usually it is along the lines of: One inch represents 16 miles. A map scale in which figures representing units (as centimeters, inches, or feet) are expressed in the form of the fraction or ratio on the earth’s surface. A bar scale (linear scale) showing that 1cm on the map corresponds to 6 km.

This picture concludes the three types of scale on a map.

Orientation /ˌɔːrɪənˈteɪʃ(ə)n,ˌɒr-/ is vital for finding your way around a map. It tells you the relative position or direction of something. Compass is a good tool to help you find the direction.

Border /ˈbɔːdə/ is a line separating two countries, administrative divisions, or other areas. It is the edge or boundary of something, or the part near it.

The orange line is the border of the United States.

Legend /ˈlɛdʒ(ə)nd/ is the wording on a map or diagram explaining the symbols used. For instance, The experimental conditions were as described in the legend to Figure 5.
